StyleBlueprint is beyond thrilled to officially introduce you to Christian Owen, our new Memphis editor! A familiar face to many of you (especially readers of Mid-South Magazine, where she served as editor), and soon to be well-known to all, Christian will be sharing the inside scoop on everything that’s wonderful about Memphis each week, right here, to help keep us busy women connected to our communities and each other. Welcome, Christian! — Liza Graves and Elizabeth Fox, co-founders
Last week we exchanged family recipes, but this week is about knowing where to pick up dinner. Disclaimer: The family will be harder to please this week. They have tasted the kitchen-to-table victory of a Thanksgiving meal, so below average cuisine will not go unnoticed.
Fortunately, Memphians have an infinite number of quality choices when it comes to assembling a fast yet fresh take-out dinner. Here are a few of my favorite menu items from centrally located, dependable places.
Cheffie’s Café emphasizes freshness, variety and eating local. Flexible hours and a flexible menu make this a good stop for the undecided and a good place to experiment. Great salad bar, creative sandwiches. Any business in the High Point area has to be hip. It’s just that kind of neighborhood. There will be no shame in picking up dinner at Cheffie’s.

Curb Side Casseroles
Curb Side Casseroles is a prepared meals business and their process is seamless. They are fast, but you never feel hurried. The large kitchen and small storefront are spotless and efficient. Curb Side, as the name suggests, has a drive-through window in addition to the walk-in option. Pick up a homemade meal prepared by Curb Side on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Go in early if you have your eye on a weekly special; they go fast. While preparing for Thanksgiving last week, my family and I gobbled up two quarts of Curb Side chili—a new go-to of mine.

“Memphis’ Original Prime Cut Steak House”—sure, a grouping of steaks from the Prime Cut Shoppe at Folk’s Folly is a popular Christmas present or take-out idea, but I actually frequent this steak house for their pimento cheese. A trio of pimento cheese, chicken salad and egg-and-olive salad from the fridge at Folk’s Folly makes for a top-of-the-line sandwich night.

Select from rows of homemade pastas, meatballs, lasagna, sauces and breads. Be sure to include Italian spinach in your bag! The Italian fare is authentically delicious, but my favorite item there is the Tarragon Chicken Salad. The prepared green salads are always filled with the crispiest lettuce, and their soups du jour never disappoint. Making it home without breaking into the box of Lucchesi’s seasoned croutons on the way is always a challenge.

The Fresh Market
I cannot offer a sincere account of my to-go route without mentioning The Fresh Market. Is it the coffee samples, the classical music? No, I think it is simply the presentation and selection of good food that makes grocery shopping at The Fresh Market a joy and not an errand. And while you are picking up milk and eggs, why not make dinner? My staple selections from the prepared foods area: rosemary salmon, tomato basil soup, pork loin, spiral ham, fried chicken, and spicy shrimp from the sushi section. Grab a fresh vegetable to quickly steam and salt at home, and your meal is complete.
