If you’ve been in my home or shopped alongside me for, well, just about anything, you know I’m drawn to pieces that tell a story. I’ve always believed that our homes should feel collected, not decorated. And, the new collaboration between Charleston, South Carolina designer Megan Molten and wallpaper studio Mitchell Black creates a beautiful backdrop for this aesthetic, as the wallpaper tells a story on its own.

Their new collaboration, which launched on April 8, captures that effortless Lowcountry style I’ve always adored but could never quite nail down. The collection features four patterns and three murals, each named after beloved South Carolina coastal spots and priced starting at $98 per 10-foot roll.

What strikes me most is how these designs avoid the typical coastal decorating traps. There’s not a navy blue anchor in sight. Instead, you’ll find hand-painted oyster shells, flowing palm fronds, and marsh scenes rendered in soft, sophisticated colorways that feel both timeless and fresh.

For example, the Charleston Marsh Mural makes you feel like you’re gazing out at the South Carolina coastline, coffee in hand, watching the morning light change over the water. It boasts palms, birds, and flowers.

For something a bit more subtle, the Bulls Bay Oysters pattern scatters shells across the paper with painterly strokes. And Sullivan Island Shells offers an oversized shell motif that feels artistic rather than kitschy.

“When collaborating with Mitchell Black on these designs, it was important to develop patterns that are undeniably coastal while creating a bit of grit and history in their dusty colorways and artistic lines,” Megan explained in her press materials.

That’s exactly what makes this collection special — it honors the Lowcountry’s heritage while feeling completely contemporary. As Lynai Jones, the founder of Mitchell Black, noted, “Megan Molten’s take on luxurious coastal interiors has been a favorite of our team for some time.”

The Lowcountry’s beauty is often defined by the beauty of the Spanish moss and oak trees, which is the subject of the Kiawah Oaks pattern. Image: Mitchell Black

I’m particularly drawn to Pawleys Island Palms, with its watercolor palm fronds that would bring the perfect amount of movement to a dining room or powder bath. The Kiawah Oaks Mural depicts twisted trees draped with moss that practically transport you to the Lowcountry.

The full collection will be available online at mitchellblack.com and meganmoltenshop.com, or you can view it in person if you’re lucky enough to visit Megan’s shop in Mount Pleasant, SC. And with a seven to 10 day turnaround time, you won’t have to wait long to transform your space.

Coastal-inspired design often walks a fine line between sophisticated and kitschy. This collection lives firmly on the sophisticated side, bringing that relaxed Lowcountry luxury into any home — no seashell soap dishes required.
