There’s something about apple butter that just tastes like fall. Each jar is rich, spiced, and packed with concentrated apple flavor, making it a natural choice for adding an autumn twist to these homemade donuts. This is the kind of cozy weekend project that will have your kitchen smelling like the season in no time.
Apple butter is the secret to giving these donuts their signature fall flavor. More concentrated (and with less water) than applesauce, it contains seasonal spices, resulting in a richer apple taste. The moisture this seasonal spread adds to the batter makes for a tender homemade treat that tastes a little more decadent.
Equally suited to a quiet autumn morning as a special occasion, these treats are always a hit. Pair them with coffee at Thanksgiving breakfast, feature them at a weekend brunch, or bring a batch to your next tailgate party. For an extra festive touch, arrange them on a platter and accent them with some pretty fall florals.
Ready to give these fall favorites a try? A few simple tips will help you get the best texture and flavor from your batch. Be careful not to overmix the batter, which can leave you with dense donuts. Aim for a thick glaze that coats each one without running off the sides. For the best seasonal flavor, make your own apple butter or pick up a jar from a local farmers’ market. It’s a delicious way to bring a little local flair to your fall baking.
Some of the best fall memories are made in the kitchen. Make these apple butter donuts with family or friends for a fun day of baking, and don’t be surprised when they become a seasonal favorite everyone begs you to make again.
