It’s officially time to start transitioning your wardrobe to cool-weather essentials, and this year, there is a new crop of outerwear trends you’ll love. The “shacket,” for example, is just one trend that’s having a moment right now — and just in time for fall. Meanwhile classic patterns, cozy textures and winter-inspired color schemes (with a splash of brightness!) are popping up in outerwear looks at all of your favorite shops. Here are five outerwear trends worth giving a go this season.

The “Shacket”

The “shacket” (shirt + jacket) is the ultimate fall weather layer. It’s an ultra-cozy, lightweight option that adds an autumnal feel to any ensemble without being too cumbersome. It’s perfect for all of your favorite fall activities, and its oversized, flannel-esque vibe offers a casual twist on the classic winter coat.

You’ll love this oatmeal-colored shacket ($95) for its versatile wear-with-anything appeal. Consider pairing this one with a fall dress or midi skirt and booties for a casual yet polished look. This plaid shacket ($129) covers two of this year’s hottest trends (shackets and plaid), and it’s perfect for styling an edgier look. Pair this one with black denim or faux leather pants and a simple top.

Quilted Bomber Jacket

The quilted bomber jacket is another perfect-for-fall option. More structured than the shacket yet less dressy than a winter coat, you’ll find yourself reaching for this one with every outfit.

This year, olive-colored quilted bomber jackets, like the one pictured below ($250), are in the fashion trend forecast. We’re drawn to this one’s flattering cut and easy feel. This black jacket ($195) is more of a puffer and perfect for keeping you warm and cozy on a rainy day. Pair either of these with jeans and a t-shirt or even leggings and an athleisure top for a simple, relaxed and comfortable look.

Brown Leather Jacket & Trench

As with many trends this year, we’re looking at 1970s fashion for inspiration, and brown leather jackets — especially trenches — are the fall and winter outerwear of choice. This classic brown faux leather jacket ($98) can be worn with any cool-weather look you’re styling. A fall dress, jeans and a t-shirt, black denim, a floral skirt … they all look stylish when topped with a brown leather jacket. The trench (on sale for $164.90; reg. $280) is just as easy to style. Consider popping this trench over your go-to pair of jeans and a blouse, and finish the look with your favorite seasonal boots.

Statement Coat

As we move into the year’s colder months, darker, more neutral shades like black, gray or navy take centerstage. If you want to bring some brightness into your winter wardrobe, a statement coat is the perfect way to do so.

This hot pink statement coat ($150) is gorgeous, and although the color may feel difficult to style, it’s easier than it seems. Look at a statement coat the same way you look at a handbag or shoes that offer a pop of color. When paired with an all-black or all-white outfit (yes, we believe in wearing white after Labor Day), this coat brings personality to the look and adds some much-needed brightness.

If pink is not your color, a hunter green coat like the one pictured below (on sale for $129.90; reg. $220), is a unique play on your typical winter neutral. And these shades of green complement nearly any color, so have fun with this one!

Classic Patterns

Plaids, check patterns and houndstooth are classic fall and winter prints for a reason. They’re easy to wear, and they add dimension and interest to an otherwise neutral outfit. Plus, each of these patterns looks oh-so-chic in a black and white color scheme but can also be a fun, subtle pop in an unexpected color.

This plaid jacket (on sale for $149.90; reg. $249) offers just that. The muted purple tone is different without being loud and can be easily thrown over jeans and a top. The houndstooth coat (on sale for $179.90; reg. $300) is classic and beautiful — perfect for dressing up an outfit or wearing over a fancier dress.
