Mixing patterns when dressing is hard. There are so many ways to get it wrong that many women often won’t give it a try. Today, we show you how to keep it simple when you use one basic item: the black and white striped tee.

Here are some examples of pattern mixing with stripes to get the discussion going.

With a black and white tee, the most basic ways to mix patterns are to keep within the same color palette (i.e., other black and white patterns), or mix with a pattern that has black or white in it. There are other things to consider and many more ways to spread your wings, but we’re sticking with the basics today!

For our first set, here are some examples of how to mix your black and white striped tee with other black and white patterns. The pop of color comes from the handbag. You can use nail polish, a scarf, jewelry, shoes, etc. to add some color, as well, or just stick to neutrals. The handbags that follow are from Elaine Turner (pink) and www.jmclaughlin.com (yellow). Next, we’re mixing a black and white tee with some more colorful patterns. Because there is so much color and pattern here, sticking with a neutral colored bag is best. These two clutches both fit the bill, yet have interesting accents to keep the fun vibe consistent with the outfit. Handbags below are from Kayce Hughes (tan) and Calypso St. Barth (black with turquoise). For other items featured in the collage, click on the image.

And, if you just can’t possibly mix patterns, just grab a red skirt or red pants, as that is such a classic combo that is also completely modern.
This wardrobe staple may cause some to worry because of the horizontal stripes; if so, simply look for another black and white patterned shirt and mix away!
