Overton Square Movie Series

Overton Square is a hotspot for food, fun, shopping, and live music — and now you can add movies to the list! The neighborhood recently launched its spring/summer movie series for kids and adults.

Head down to Chimes Square Courtyard on Trimble Place for movie nights, held every Thursday through October and November. The lineup features free screenings of fantasy films, horror classics, sci-fi, and action flicks, including:

October 3: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
October 10: Inception
October 17: Haunted Mansion  
October 24: Lisa Frankenstein

The Cemetery Cinema at Elmwood

Soak in the spectral beauty of historic Elmwood Cemetery with a fun, unique film series that helps fund the cemetery’s maintenance. Elmwood’s Cemetery Cinema, sponsored by Baltz & Sons Concrete, returns on Friday, October 25, with a classic double feature: Invasion of the Body Snatchers, followed by House on Haunted Hill.

Showtime starts around sunset (roughly 6:15 p.m.), and the film will be projected onto the roof of Elmwood’s gothic cottage, a landmark on the National Register of Historic Places.

Movies in the Park, a free fall outdoor movie series sponsored by Memphis Parks, kicks off October 5 and runs every Saturday through the month. Showtimes start at 5:30 p.m., with snacks and water provided. Moviegoers are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets — and dress in costume to celebrate the movie’s theme. This season’s lineup includes:

October 5: Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie at Lewis-Davis Park
October 12: Inside Out 2 at Hollywood Park

Each month for the rest of the year, the Memphis Museum of Science and History (MoSH) will host Movies and Brews sponsored by Hampline Brewing Company. Films will be shown on the Giant Screen Theater at the Pink Palace Museum & Mansion — and each one includes exclusive pre-show programming to enhance your enjoyment and knowledge of the featured film. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and tickets are just $23! Here’s the lineup:

Enjoy a movie under the stars any night of the week at the Malco Summer Drive-In, a Memphis staple and one of roughly 300 drive-ins left in America. The drive-in features indoor restrooms, an old-school concession stand, and four screens regularly showing double features.

Admission is $7 for adults, and the box office opens at 7:30 p.m. for 8:30 p.m. shows. In addition to its standard slate of releases, the drive-in hosts all-night movie marathons each month as part of the Time Warp Drive-in Movie Series, sponsored by Black Lodge and Guerrilla Monster Films.

This fall’s Time Warp themes include Stephen King thrillers, a Hannibal Lecter double feature, and holly-jolly holiday horror.
