A safe home changes everything. When roofs leak, floors give way, or utilities fail, families face more than inconvenience. They face uncertainty. For many Nashvillians living on fixed incomes, the cost of home repairs is out of reach. That’s where Rebuilding Together Nashville steps in.

Since its founding in 1995, the nonprofit has united volunteers, skilled tradespeople, and neighbors to repair the homes of low-income residents — keeping families safe, warm, and stable. What began as a small effort among local architects (initially called Christmas in April) has evolved into a citywide mission that continues to transform lives.

Rebuilding Together Nashville’s roots stretch back three decades, when members of the local architecture community came together to use their tools and time to help neighbors in need. The group organized an annual month of service each April, repairing homes for seniors, veterans, and families struggling to afford maintenance.

In 2001, Christmas in April officially became Rebuilding Together Nashville, expanding its outreach while keeping the same spirit of compassion. Then came 2010, and with it, Nashville’s devastating May flood. The organization rolled up its sleeves and went to work. Between July 2010 and July 2011 alone, it served 141 flood-impacted homes with the help of more than 2,400 volunteers.

Today, that same hands-on commitment fuels their work as the city grapples with rising housing costs and an affordability crisis. Rebuilding Together Nashville continues to bridge the gap for homeowners who want to stay in the neighborhoods they’ve built their lives around but can’t afford the costly repairs that come with aging homes.

“Rebuilding Together Nashville was founded in 1995 by a group of volunteers from the architecture community who saw a need and decided to act,” says Andrea Price, CEO of Rebuilding Together Nashville. “What I love most about our origin story is that the community-centered approach has remained at the heart of everything we do for 30 years. From the very beginning, it’s been about neighbors helping neighbors, and that spirit of collaboration and care continues to drive our work today.”

“The impact goes so much deeper than new roofs or accessible bathrooms,” Andrea continues. “Home repairs have the power to keep someone in their home longer, which directly impacts their quality of life in profound ways. After we complete a project, you see people physically relax. They tell us how much less stressed and worried they are. We’re not just fixing houses; we’re restoring peace of mind and dignity.”

“One homeowner told me that after our repairs, she finally felt like she had the mental freedom to pursue a lifelong dream of learning how to swim,” Andrea adds. “That’s what this work is really about — giving people back the space to dream and live fully.”

Few stories capture the heart of this mission better than that of Anita Richardson, a longtime North Nashville homeowner whose house had slowly fallen into disrepair.

“Being a single parent and on a fixed income, I was having a whole lot of problems, like some floor issues,” Anita says. “I had not had any new windows since I bought it. And according to the man doing the work, these windows were put in in 1998. That’s how old the windows were.”

For Anita, raising her great-niece and great-nephew in that home made its safety even more important, but the repairs she needed were far beyond what she could afford. Then Rebuilding Together Nashville showed up.

Every completed project represents more than a fixed floor or a new roof; it’s renewed confidence for a homeowner and a ripple of hope through the community.

“I told him I did not want the old bathtub, because I’m getting older and stepping into the bathtub may become a challenge. So they’re putting in a walk-in shower,” Anita says. “Rebuilding Together was like my angel. A God-given gift.”

Her gratitude echoes what countless homeowners feel when volunteers arrive: relief, security, and the realization that neighbors truly care.

Andrea recalls another homeowner whose story has stayed with her — one that mirrors the profound impact of this work.

“The man originally came to us because his water bill was sky-high. He had a mainline plumbing leak he couldn’t afford to fix. When we went out for the assessment, we discovered so many other issues. His roof was leaking so badly that he told us, ‘It rains inside when it rains outside.’ We were able to fix the plumbing, repair the roof, and address several other critical safety issues. We gave him a safe, dry place to remain for his final years with dignity,” she says. “Now, we’re working with his family to maintain his estate so it can stay in their family — preserving and building generational wealth. That’s the ripple effect of this work.”

Where Does Your $50 Go?

At Rebuilding Together Nashville, donations directly fund the materials that make homes safer and lives stronger — flooring, plumbing supplies, insulation, and more. A single $50 gift can help replace damaged flooring, patch a roof, or buy hardware for an accessibility ramp.

Each contribution adds up to something powerful: a Nashvillian who can remain safely in their home, surrounded by the community they love.

Since 1995, Rebuilding Together Nashville has been proving that when people come together, they don’t just fix houses; they rebuild hope. Volunteers trade hammers and nails for connection and compassion, turning construction projects into moments of dignity and relief.

“Always give to others, because you never know who you’re truly blessing,” Anita says. “These people have blessed me so richly; I still cry just thinking that someone was there when I really needed it most.”

Andrea emphasizes that behind every project are homeowners who’ve worked hard all their lives but now need support, and that asking for help is an act of bravery, not weakness. “I wish people understood that asking for help takes tremendous courage,” she says.

She adds, “Sometimes homeowners are afraid to reach out because they worry they’ll be judged or feel embarrassed about how long they’ve let maintenance items go. But life happens — medical bills pile up, money doesn’t stretch far enough, or physical limitations make repairs impossible. From the very first conversation, we work to dispel that fear. We ask questions from a place of curiosity and a genuine desire to improve their lives, never from judgment.”

Because in the end, that’s what Rebuilding Together Nashville is all about … neighbors helping neighbors stay safe, strong, and home.

“I’m incredibly proud of how my team works as true partners with the homeowners and communities we serve,” Andrea says. “We take extra time and care to build relationships where homeowners know they can depend on and trust us. It’s not about us coming in as experts to fix things and leave — it’s about walking alongside people, listening to their needs, and creating solutions together.”
