H. Audrey 2.0: A Conversation with the New Owner of Nashville’s Iconic Boutique
A year after quietly taking the reins of H. Audrey, Mitch Johnson honors the beloved boutique’s legacy while thoughtfully expanding its offerings for today’s style-savvy, multi-generational, occasion-ready, and contemporary shopper. Image:
If you’ve walked into H. Audrey lately and thought, “This feels different,” you’re not wrong. It’s not just fuller racks or a stunning new shoe salon upstairs — it’s the energy. One year into new ownership, Mitch Johnson, a retail veteran with over two decades at Neiman Marcus, has infused the boutique with both reverence for its roots and a bold new vision.
We sat down at the boutique for a candid conversation about what it means to take the reins of one of Nashville’s most beloved fashion destinations, and where he’s steering it next.

A Serendipitous Beginning
Mitch officially became the owner of H. Audrey in May 2024, but the seeds were planted long before. “A mutual friend of Holly [Williams] and me called me one day and said, ‘I think Holly is really serious about selling H. Audrey.’”
Coincidentally, both Mitch and Holly were vacationing with their families at Rosemary Beach over New Year’s Eve. They met at the town Christmas tree, had a heartfelt conversation, and it became a business-changing moment. “She met my wife and me at the same time and said, ‘You’re the one to take this store to the next level,’” he recalls.
From the Buying Office to Boutique Owner
Mitch isn’t new to fashion. With over 25 years at Neiman Marcus in Dallas, mainly in the merchant division, he’s spent his career cultivating relationships with the best contemporary and luxury brands. “That experience gave me a black book of vendor relationships that’s pretty powerful,” he says. “When I went to New York to buy for H. Audrey, almost everyone said yes. They didn’t care that it was a smaller store. I had credibility.”
That credibility meant bringing in fresh lines like Staud (now one of their top performers), expanding their shoe assortment to an upstairs salon, and introducing a tightly curated collection of vintage Chanel handbags.

Evolution, Not Reinvention
As a longtime fan of H. Audrey, this is a “don’t worry” moment. I promise you the spirit of the boutique remains intact with Mitch.
“We’ve just added to it,” Mitch says. “I loved H. Audrey before I owned it. I loved the mix. But now, it’s more robust. We’ve expanded the occasionwear, added new categories, and we’re dressing everyone from the mother-of-the-bride to the woman headed to the Swan Ball.”
And if you haven’t been in a while, expect to be surprised. “People still associate us with leather jackets, jeans, and Frank & Eileen shirts. That’s still here, but there’s so much more now.”

Nashville’s Fashion Landscape and Spirit
One of the reasons Mitch saw potential in H. Audrey was Nashville’s unique retail landscape. “Unlike other cities with big-box players like Saks or Neiman Marcus, Nashville’s high-end fashion scene is driven by local boutiques. That was a huge opportunity.”
He’s also quick to note the camaraderie among store owners here. “I’ve had coffee with Kimberly from Emerson Grace. I know the team at Gus Mayer. We all serve different niches, and there’s a spirit of collaboration, not competition.”
Even beyond Nashville, some of H. Audrey’s most loyal customers don’t live in the city at all. “We work with people nationwide, sending boxes on approval, offering styling services, and even working in their closets. The team is known for their relationships, and that’s something that will absolutely continue.”

A Boutique for All Ages
One of Mitch’s guiding principles is that H. Audrey has no age limit.
“It’s not about how old you are; it’s about your point of view. I want the daughter, mother, and grandmother all shopping together here. I’ve had customers in their 70s and 20s in the same day, both leaving with something that made them feel amazing.”
This inclusive spirit extends beyond sizing or age. “It’s about making women feel confident and beautiful,” he adds. “That’s the goal.”
What’s Next: Fall Fashion and Future Plans
As fall approaches, Mitch is excited about what’s arriving daily. “Leather and suede feel fresh again — in pants, jackets, and dresses. We’re also seeing new silhouettes in denim that are really resonating. Think wide legs, barrel shapes, and elevated washes.”
While the color of the season isn’t as defined this year, rich browns and carryover tones from last year continue to be strong. And when it comes to accessories? “Evening clutches and special occasion bags are big. We’re also now offering a broader shoe selection. And yes, we can special order just about anything.”
Looking ahead, Mitch sees potential in opening a second H. Audrey location — likely south of town in Franklin or another community-centric area. “Nashville is a city of bubbles. People won’t always drive across town to shop, so we’re exploring where H. Audrey can meet them where they are.”

An Invitation to Return
If you haven’t visited H. Audrey lately, Mitch hopes you’ll stop in. “It’s H. Audrey 2.0,” he smiles. “Same soul, bigger vision. Come see what we’ve done.”
Whether you’re shopping for an event, need a wardrobe refresh, or simply want to feel amazing in what you wear, H. Audrey’s new chapter is full of thoughtful style, warm relationships, and that indescribable feeling when you find something you didn’t even know you were looking for.
