Settled by German immigrants in the 1870s, Louisville’s Germantown neighborhood is about 0.6 square miles and has a population of around 4,000. But don’t let the small size fool you! The walkable area is packed with local restaurants, cozy green spaces, and vintage shops, making it an easy destination for an afternoon of exploring.
WHERE TO EAT + DRINK
From breakfast spots and neighborhood bars to a restaurant run by a four-time James Beard House guest chef, there’s a Germantown stop for every meal of the day.
- Barret Bar & Grill: Regulars at this neighborhood bar often stop in for a game of pool, a beer, and bar food. There’s also patio seating, perfect for enjoying a drink or two on a sunny summer day.
- Bean: In addition to a variety of espresso drinks, this corner coffee shop offers sandwiches, bagels, and other breakfast fare.
- Big Bad Breakfast: This Southern breakfast chain’s first Louisville location serves everything from house-cured Tabasco brown-sugar bacon to crispy Southern-fried chicken and Weisenberger grits.
- Breakfast AF & Pizza AF: A breakfast spot by day and a pizza joint by night, this Goss Avenue restaurant serves creative twists on familiar takes. Try the Togarashi Smoked Spamwich, made with smoked and griddled SPAM, a folded egg, American cheese, and Sriracha aioli on Texas toast.
- Check’s Cafe: For more than 60 years, this neighborhood bar and grill has served up favorites like chili, fried fish, and German potato salad.
- Four Pegs Smokehouse and Bar: Specializing in smoked meats, this spot offers ribs, wraps, sandwiches, and more.
- Full Stop Station: As the name suggests, this is a one-stop shop for food and coffee, including a wide variety of vegan eats. Get it to go or fuel up for the day at a picnic table outside.
- Hammerheads: A Louisville staple, this restaurant is known for pub-grub-style burgers, duck-fat fries, and smoked chicken wings.
- Hauck’s Corner: The former spot of Hauck’s Handy Store is true to its historic roots, as the space was carefully preserved during its 2022 renovation. You can enjoy everything from fried pickles and burgers to beer and unique cocktails in this one-of-a-kind, iconic space.
- Nachbar: Featuring a dog-friendly outdoor area, this laid-back spot offers imported beer and whiskey, and allows you to bring your own grub.
- North of Bourbon: Recognized by The New York Times as one of the Top 50 Restaurants in America in 2024, this spot features a menu that blends the flavors of Louisville and New Orleans for a unique Southern experience.
- Sarino: This Italian dinner destination offers Neapolitan pizza and fresh pasta, along with a selection of wines and craft cocktails.
- The Pearl of Germantown: This funky neighborhood tavern offers drinks, bar games, and old-school music. Feel free to bring your own food!
- Phalcha Coffee: This one-of-a-kind coffee shop boasts creamy ube lattes, iced coffee flights, and tasty avocado toast.
- The Post: A variety of New York-style pizzas are served daily until midnight, with specials like The Elote and Chicago Dog making an occasional appearance.
- TANA: An acronym for “Taiwanese New American,” and a nod to the island’s native tana plant, this restaurant serves dishes that blend Guangdong (Cantonese), Fujian, and Jiangsu cuisines from China, mixed with an American twist.
- We Scream Ice Cream: Serving 14 Blue Bell flavors, this ice cream shop offers scoops, cones, custom milkshakes, and specialty floats made with dozens of soda flavors.
