Kathryn and Duff Berschback know houses: they’ve lived in 5 houses in the past 15 years. With each move, they have honed their tastes, and after living in both traditional and modern homes, they realized their true desire was to keep a modern point of view, pare down and live where dinner and shopping were within walking distance.
With older kids, they wanted a comfortable house that beckoned impromptu gatherings. What they didn’t want was a house filled with unused space. Unbelievably, they closed on an empty lot in July of 2012, and by Christmas the same year, they had finished construction and moved in! Kathryn, always fond of home design, took on the project as a full-time job and in the process discovered a sincere interest in the subject. She is now enrolled at O’More College of Design, in Franklin, TN, and is pursing a degree. If this house is any indication, a strong client list will be lining up!

PinThe classic Craftsman-style door, painted bright green, welcomes you and gives you a bit of an idea what to expect: classic lines with modern updates.PinThe entryway is bright and calm. The orchid print is framed in a custom-designed acrylic frame. The mirrored piece, from Epiphany, reflects the light beautifully adding immediate glamor. The white on the walls is “White Dove” by Sherwin Williams. The paint on the door is “Black” by Benjamin Moore.PinThe family room furniture is a combination of Mitchell Gold and Taylor Scott from Epiphany. Of note is that the Taylor Scott sofa is slipcovered in fully washable fabric! And, see that gallery wall filled with black and white photos? They are all by the incredible Dennis Wile.PinI like this perspective as you can see the family room, but you get a nice view into the master bedroom and the mudroom that leads to the back. Notice the large yellow painting on the wall? It’s just cheap board from Home Depot painted in yellow chalk paint! Pink chalk stays on hand for messages. This solution for a pop of color was imagined by Kathryn and Lynette Wright of Wright Decorative Painting.PinA view of the family room from the kitchen. The rug is perfect, but it took trying a variety of four different rugs before the right one was found (which is why you always take rugs out on approval!). The beautiful pillows are Missoni, a splurge purchase while on a trip in Italy. The table is actually made for the outdoors, but used indoors, and the chairs are from the Taylor Scott line found at Epiphany. The chandelier was ordered through Ferguson. The grass cloth wallpaper is by Phillip Jeffries.PinThis coffee maker was the hit of our group as we toured the house. Kathryn and Duff have different tastes in coffee and how to brew it. Through their Miele coffee maker, they can each brew their perfect cup!PinHow fun is this guest room? With wallpaper from designyourwall.com, and a bright pop of color provided by the yellow lamps from Mitchell Gold, this room offers a welcome smile to any guest lucky enough to stay here. The bedding is from Target and the headboard from wayfair.com.PinThe master bedroom is uncluttered and beautiful. The headboard, custom-made through Upholstery Designs Unlimited, and chandelier from Epiphany are both standout beauties against this Gauntlet Gray paint by Sherwin Williams.PinThe master bath is a seamless part of the house as the countertops use the same material as used in the kitchen: Calcutta Gold Marble.PinThe study is lively with a nod to the past. The desk was Kathryn’s grandfather’s when he was CEO of National Life Insurance Company. The black chairs (one is at the desk) are from the former conference room at Acuff Rose Music Publishing (now Sony) and have sat such music royalty as Willie Nelson, Roy Orbison and Hank Williams. These pieces are rich with history and personal memories.PinThe framed album covers showcase music the couple grew up with, but also is a nod to the fact that both prefer to listen to music from a vinyl record. One of their favorite things to do is play a record the whole way through.PinThe wall here is painted by Wright Decorative Finishes. Kathryn’s drafting table is set up for interior design school homework. The blue background for the room, which is also used on the exterior of the house, is Raccoon Fur by Benjamin Moore.PinA bright burst of color as you walk down the stairs. The painting is by Olivia Daane and the chandelier was ordered through Ferguson.PinHow fun is this media room? Oh my gosh! Just pile onto this sofa, from Mitchell Gold. Many a movie is watched in this room. And, isn’t the Roland Renaud painting simply PERFECT for this room?! This enormous piece of art was found at Epiphany.
Imagine living here and walking for coffee, meals, shopping and even to the park. Pretty ideal, huh?
