Facial rollers, like these from Herbivore, are the beauty world’s new favorite tool. Image: Herbivore

We first noticed a surge in the facial rolling trend with Nurse Jamie’s Uplift Massaging Facial Roller, which hit the market with a bang a few years ago. This compact, little tool is rolled in an upward motion across the face with the intention of energizing, enhancing, reviving and uplifting skin. And guess what?! It really works! So, when Herbivore’s Jade Facial Roller joined the party, we were ready to celebrate.

According to Herbivore, facial rolling is a beauty ritual that dates back to Seventh Century China, when women would use facial rolling to reduce the appearance of puffiness and wrinkles. Today, the look of the tool may have changed, but the intention remains the same. The facial roller is a de-stressing and relaxing tool that not only aids in firming skin and reducing the look of puffiness, but it also helps to support and drain the lymphatic system, which is the body’s main major detoxifying system. For us skincare lovers, the words “main major detoxifying system” make our ears perk up. If you can get rid of the toxins inside your body, your skin, hair, nails and overall appearance will improve. Plus, your body will have more energy, giving you that added boost to get through each day.

How can a simple facial roller actually yield results? Well, when rolled across the face, it actually massages the lymphatic system by moving excess water that is stored in our bodies. This, in turn, causes the puffiness in our face to fade, and when the lymphatic system flows freely, the results are clearer, healthy-looking skin without a buildup of toxins. It will also improve the elasticity of skin, reduce fine lines, ease muscle tension (great for those with tight jaws) and help whatever product you are using absorb into the skin more intensely.

Additionally, jade is known to be a positive crystal that brings prosperity, purity, tranquility, peace and harmony to the user. It is meant for emotional healing and is known to relieve irritability while helping to eliminate negativity and bring abundance to your life. So, whether you’re using it for its scientific or metaphysical benefits, this tiny tool can bring both physical and emotional change.

Before you run to the store and add this magical abundance-bringing beauty tool into your daily routine, we first want to explain the best ways to use it. We suggest storing your facial roller in the refrigerator or freezer. Not only will this be a refreshing and soothing way to greet your skin in the morning and before bed, but it will also help to more quickly reduce that unwanted morning puffiness.

After cleansing and toning your skin, take your roller out of the freezer and add a few drops of your favorite facial oil into the skin. Then, roll the facial roller across the skin gently in upward motions with a major focus on the cheeks.  Repeat this for one to two minutes, and after a few weeks of use, notice a change in your skin’s elasticity and brightness. If you are in need of facial oil suggestions, here are three of our favorites.

Jade isn’t the only crystal available in Herbivore’s line of facial rollers. There is also a rose quartz version which, in addition to helping to drain the lymphatic system and reduce puffiness, connects to the user’s heart chakra, the energy center of love. Worth noting: There are some negative reviews, which remark on the tool’s squeakiness and durability. Since these complaints surfaced, Herbivore has worked to improve the durability of the tool.

Additionally, we suggest giving the Nurse Jamie Uplift Massaging Facial Roller a try. This is the first contemporary facial roller to make a big splash in the beauty world, and it quickly became a cult favorite. This tool, which is a bit pricier than the jade roller, features 24 unique massaging stones that replicate the techniques used in spa facials to improve the appearance of skin tone and create youthful, radiant results.
