Affectionately named “The Salty Angler,” this Cape Haze, FL, retreat pays homage to the homeowner’s passion for fishing  — sans kitsch. No, you won’t find any pastel Welcome to the Beach signage here. Instead, you’ll find moody natural textures and tones, subtle nods to the coastal setting, and bright, breezy living spaces with ample natural light.

Florida interior designer Nicole Roe of R. Nickson Interiors transformed the outdated 1990s interior of this waterfront bungalow into a stylish escape. “It had so much potential … great natural light, a killer location right on the water … but it was definitely stuck in another era,” says Nicole. “You could see the bones were good; it just needed a major refresh to bring it into today’s world and really make the most of those views.”

The homeowner trusted Nicole’s vision for “a cool, unfussy place for him and his buddies to crash after a day of fishing,” and the result was an effortlessly stylish space that honors its setting without being overwhelmed by it.

Take a look around!

The view was a huge source of inspiration — how could it not be? You’ve got that wide open water right out the back, so we wanted the interiors to complement it, not compete,” says Nicole. “But we also leaned into the purpose of the home: a fishing escape with comfort, not kitsch.” Image: Michael Scott

“We played with natural textures, moody tones, and subtle coastal references that nod to the location without screaming ‘beach house, ‘” says Nicole. Image: Michael Scott

“When it came to the art, we really wanted it to feel personal and layered, without being too literal. We pulled pieces from Wescover, Etsy, and even Four Hands Art, which I love because they highlight real artists through their Texas-based studio,” says Nicole. “It gave the house a curated, collected feel without being overly polished — just cool pieces that feel like they’ve been gathered over time.” Image: Michael Scott

Plenty of windows invite natural light and showcase stunning views of the water. Because ultimately, that’s what this design was all about, says Nicole. “Just a cool, unfussy place for him and his buddies to crash after a day of fishing. Durable, laid-back, and masculine without trying too hard.” Image: Michael Scott
