Looking for something fun to do in Birmingham? A new kind of hangout is making its mark across the city, pairing curated vinyl with cocktails and conversation in spaces designed for truly hearing the music.

High Dive HiFi Lounge in Lakeview and Ralph’s Listening Lounge downtown are two of the newest Birmingham listening lounges to join the scene. While each has its own distinct personality, both put the music front and center, inviting you to hang out and vibe for a while.

High Dive HiFi Lounge makes a pretty compelling case for slowing down. Located in the Lakeview District, this new spot — which opened last December — couples vinyl and carefully curated sound with coffee, cocktails, and a menu that carries you from breakfast through dinner. But the music is what sets it apart.

Rather than serving as background noise, it’s meant to be heard, and the entire space was designed with that in mind. From the acoustics to the placement of the speakers to the equipment working quietly behind the scenes, every detail was considered to create a better listening experience.

“I love that it is about slowness, presence, and quality,” says owner and founder Bart Stephens. “It is the antithesis of being on your phone.”

But while there’s plenty of intention behind High Dive, you won’t find an overly serious attitude to match. Even the name is a playful nod to Bart’s idea of creating a “high-end dive bar,” while fitting right in with Lakeview’s nautical-inspired surroundings and neighboring Seasick Records.

The mood is relaxed — a place where you can grab a morning coffee, settle in for drinks, or meet a friend for lunch or dinner and enjoy a collaborative menu from James Beard Award-winning Chef Sean Brock.

The playlist changes from day to day, and is curated by a team rather than a single resident selector. Guest DJs and music lovers are also invited to take a turn. There’s even a jukebox during happy hour that lets you have a say in what comes next.

And while the Dolby Atmos sound system can make a familiar song like Elton John’s “Rocket Man” sound like something entirely new, you don’t need to know the difference between an amp and a turntable to enjoy it. High Dive is less about knowing how to listen and more about simply taking the time to do it. “We want them to feel welcome when they arrive,” says Bart, “and relaxed when they leave.”

Ralph’s Listening Lounge

Neighborhood: Downtown

A few blocks away, Ralph’s Listening Lounge is taking a similarly thoughtful approach to the art of listening. Opened in late July by longtime friends and business partners Qadeem Hassan and Justin Speegle, the new Second Avenue North spot is named for Speegle’s late father.

Cozy seating surrounds a bar lined with more than 1,500 vinyl records, vintage audio equipment, and bottles of spirits, while a pair of Klipsch Cornwall IV speakers fills the room with music.

Inspired by the Japanese jazz kissa tradition, Ralph’s puts the listening experience at the center of your experience. The soundtrack changes depending on the night, giving regulars a reason to keep coming back. One night may feature instrumental music and low-sensory listening, while another might be dedicated to anything from new releases to jazz, reggae, house, R&B, or soul.

‘Guest-curated sets add another element of surprise, making the music as much a friend for the evening as the company you keep.

That same playful attention to music carries into the cocktail menu, which is organized like a record collection. The Track List features seasonal originals, while B-Sides gives classic cocktails an unexpected spin. Highballs pays homage to the Japanese hi-fi bar tradition.

A standout offering is the Ring My Bell, a drink named after the disco classic and featuring reposado tequila, Cocchi Americano, yellow bell pepper, lemon, salt, and pepper.

Still, the appeal of Ralph’s goes beyond its impressive record and cocktail collections. Qadeem and Justin have created a place where you can let the music set the mood, while the cocktails keep the conversation going.

In a city with no shortage of places to grab a drink, the arrival of High Dive HiFi Lounge and Ralph’s Listening Lounge signals a new kind of night out for Birmingham — one that offers a little less rushing and a lot more listening. Together, they’re part of a growing scene that invites us all to slow down and savor the soundtrack of the evening.

See you there soon, Birmingham!
