The Best Luxury Train Journeys in North America
Imagine winding through the mountains in a glass-domed railcar or enjoying a wine-soaked day trip along a scenic route. Now you can, thanks to luxury train journeys that pair high-end service with unforgettable landscapes. Here are some of our favorite North American routes that provide a one-of-a-kind, memorable experience. All aboard! Image: Napa Valley Wine Train
Luxury rail travel is a trend on the rise for many reasons. Glass-domed windows, delicious cuisine, no traffic or TSA lines. Whatβs not to love about moving from car to car, relaxing, and soaking in the views at your leisure? While many places in Europe have nailed the boutique hotel-on-rails vibe, weβve been slower to catch on in America. But the options are growing, and their popularity is, too. Here are eight ideas for luxury train journeys in the U.S. (and a few in Canada!)
Canyon Spirit
Rockies to the Red Rocks
Canyon Spirit has the most anticipated luxury train journeys launching this year. Rockies to the Red Rocks offers a classic two-day Denver-to-Moab journey, and a new three-day extension runs from Denver to Salt Lake City, with overnights in Glenwood Springs and Moab.
This route is wildly cinematic. Expect sheer canyon walls in Glenwood Canyon, the Colorado River twisting alongside the tracks, a shift from alpine greens to rust-red desert cliffs, and the wide-open Moab landscapes that feel almost Mars-esque. This is also an opportunity to visit the βMighty 5β Utah National Parks: Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands, and Arches.
Settle into wide, plush seating, take in spectacular views from oversized windows (or partial-dome-style glass, depending on class), and enjoy the intentionally slow-paced experience. Regionally inspired meals are served at your seat, and paired with wine, cocktails, and stories from guides who narrate what youβre seeing. The best time to book is late spring and fall, when the Southwest offers its prettiest light and milder temperatures.
Amtrak Crescent
New Orleans to New York
The Southeast has many quaint, scenic rail lines, but Amtrak Crescent is the closest thing to a true, long-haul semi-luxurious rail journey. Book a bedroom for the 30-hour trip, and youβll have a private cabin that converts from comfortable seating by day to a cozy bed at night, and includes attendant service (yes, someone makes your bed), access to the dining car (meals are included and served with linens and real flatware), and a lounge/cafΓ© car for coffee, cocktails, and stretching your legs.
Itβs not ultra-polished luxury, but it has that old-school train energy that reawakens your inner child. You can settle in, unpack a little, and let the trip unfold slowly. The visual beauty of this route lies in the changing rhythm of the East Coast. Heading south, youβll see the dense Northeast corridors give way to rolling Virginia countryside, Carolina pine forests, rivers, and farmland, and small Southern towns youβd never otherwise pass through. Hereβs a great recap of the New York to New Orleans route.
Rocky Mountaineer
GoldLeaf Service through The Rockies
We had to include Canadaβs Rocky Mountaineer in this list, as itβs the gold standard of luxury rail in North America. The GoldLeaf service especially feels like a moving glass observatory with two-level dome cars, attentive hosts topping off your wine, and multi-course meals served downstairs on white tablecloths. This rail line offers short journeys, Rockies highlights, and circular journeys, depending on how far you want to go and the terrain you want to cover.
The First Passage to the West route is like a βgreatest hitsβ playlist of the Rockies. It runs from Vancouver to Banff/Lake Louise over two daylight-only days with an overnight in Kamloops, which is a big part of the luxury appeal because you actually see the scenery instead of sleeping through it. The headline sights are the dramatic Fraser Canyon cliffs and river, the Continental Divide, and the engineering marvels of the Spiral Tunnels.

Journey through the Clouds is another popular Rocky Mountaineer route that runs from Vancouver to Jasper over two days. It offers an overnight in Kamloops and is especially good for travelers who want a wilder, slightly less βgreatest-hitsβ Rockies feel. Highlights include the Fraser River, the Coast Mountains, waterfalls, and the approach into Jasper.
Chattanooga Dinner Train
B&O Private Car 98
The Chattanooga Dinner Train is a uniquely nostalgic dinner-on-wheels. Any seat is great, but the private car experience takes it up several notches. Youβre essentially booking your own rolling dining room in a restored vintage railcar for your group of up to eight. Thereβs plush seating, polished wood, and that old-world, clubby feel. During the two-to-three-hour ride, enjoy dedicated service and a multi-course meal served on white tablecloths with real china.
This train journey is particularly magical over the holidays. Cars are decked out in twinkle lights, garlands, and classic holiday decor. The tunes and menu offerings are festive, too. Consider booking Christmas dinner well in advance if you want the luxe car!

Alaska Railroad
GoldStar Service
For a U.S. trip that feels genuinely upscale and bucket list-worthy, this one belongs high on your list. The Denali Star runs between Anchorage and Fairbanks, stopping at Talkeetna and Denali National Park. And the premium GoldStar class adds glass-dome seating, meals, beverages, guides, and an outdoor viewing platform. It is usually done as a daylight rail journey, but many travelers turn it into a luxe multi-day trip with an overnight in Denali or a lodge stay.

This is one of the most visually raw and wild routes. Think braided rivers and glacial valleys, dense spruce forests, occasional views of Denali (if the weather cooperates). Wildlife sightings of moose, bears, and eagles make you feel like youβre in a nature documentary. Similar to the Canadian Rockies routes, late June through early September is the best time to go.
One of the prettiest premium day rides in America, the Coastal Classic route runs from Anchorage to Seward, hugging Turnagain Arm and passing through some of Alaskaβs most dramatic coastal and mountain scenery. Like the Denali Star, it is a daylight trip, not a sleeper, but it works beautifully in a luxe Alaska itinerary with lodge nights or a cruise add-on in Seward. For this one, book in July or August, when wildlife viewing and long daylight hours are at their peak.
Napa Valley Wine Train
Legacy Experience
This is less a grand rail expedition and more of a fine-dining day trip. But for those who love Napa wines, great food, and vintage romance, it absolutely earns a slot on the train bucket list. The line runs a 36-mile round-trip from downtown Napa to St. Helena and back. The train is outfitted with polished wood interiors, vintage Pullman-style cars, and an open-air car to soak up the rolling vineyard views as far as the eye can see.
The most luxurious option is the Legacy Experience, a roughly six-hour itinerary that includes a four-course meal, wine tastings, and winery stops at Charles Krug and V. Sattui. There is no overnight on the train, but it pairs easily with a high-end Napa hotel stay. It runs year-round, but September and October have a lovely harvest atmosphere. Take a peek.
Grand Canyon Railway
Luxury Dome Class
Another full-day excursion thatβs a more accessible Western splurge, Grand Canyon Railwayβs Luxury Dome Class combines breathtaking views from the Observation Dome with the opulence of nostalgic Parlor cars. It runs from Williams, Arizona, to Grand Canyon National Parkβs South Rim, about 65 miles each way.
The train itself is not ultra-luxe in the Rocky Mountaineer sense, but it is stylish, scenic, and perfect for pairing with a resort stay in Arizona. Another huge plus? You skip the car headaches of driving from the Phoenix area to the Grand Canyon!

VIA Rail
The Canadian in Prestige Class
For a train journey that feels truly epic and old-school grand, this is it. VIA Railβs The Canadian links Toronto and Vancouver, with sleeper service and higher-end Prestige Class options, crossing places like the Canadian Shield, prairie country, Edmonton/Jasper, and the Rockies.
This is very much an overnight, multi-night train. Do Toronto to Vancouver for the full transcontinental splurge, or carve out luxe shorter sections like Toronto to Jasper or Jasper to Vancouver. The Prestige Class gets you all-inclusive meals and bar service, a personalized concierge, and access to lounges, scenic cars, performances, and more.

Choo choo choose luxury while planning your next trip!
