Summer is the perfect time to gather with friends, find the nearest body of water, and sip on some fantastic wines. As someone who’s fairly particular about my wine (read: wine snob), especially favoring imported selections, I believe fancy wine doesn’t need to break the bank. Whether you’re planning a picnic, a relaxed pool day, or a backyard dinner party, I’ve got you covered with five summer wine picks that are as vibrant as the season itself.
Everyday Elegance: François Montand Brut Rosé
For an easy-to-sip yet elegant sparkling summer wine, look no further than François Montand Brut Rosé. This French sparkling wine, a personal favorite available at The Turnip Truck (I also adore their Blanc de Blanc), is crafted using the labor-intensive Méthode Traditionnelle. This method, where the wine undergoes a second fermentation in the bottle and spends time on the lees, adds remarkable richness and complexity.
François Montand offers a high-quality, delicious sparkling wine with a classic French label, proving exceptional bubbles can be both accessible and a joy to drink all summer long.
Lakeside Lounging: Quinta do Ameal Loureiro
For those sweltering summer days spent on the water, I reach for a bottle of Quinta do Ameal Loureiro. This crisp, aromatic white from Portugal’s Vinho Verde region is a true thirst-quencher. Bursting with invigorating notes of citrus, green apple, and fragrant florals, it’s delightfully refreshing and zippy, making it an ideal companion for a sunny escape.
Adventurous Backyard Bashes: Pino Roman “Naranjo”
Looking to impress your friends at your next backyard dinner party? The Pino Roman “Naranjo” is a fantastic choice for the adventurous palate. This unique skin-contact white from Romania offers a captivating texture and intriguing notes of apricot, tea, and citrus peel. Its dry, slightly tannic finish makes for sophisticated sipping and will undoubtedly be a conversation starter.
Perfect for Picnics: Vino Volta Méthode Ancestrale Grenache
Imagine this: a checkered blanket spread out in the park, a basket of delicious snacks, and a bottle of Vino Volta Méthode Ancestrale Grenache from Australia. This bright, juicy red is brimming with vibrant red berry notes and a hint of spice, making it incredibly chill-friendly and perfect for enjoying amidst nature. Its lively character is a delightful match for casual bites and good company.
SB Tip: Try a glass of the Quinta do Ameal Loureiro, Pino Roman “Naranjo,” or Vino Volta Méthode Ancestrale Grenache at Pont Neuf in Sylvan Park’s L&L Market.
A Washington Gem: 2020 Viognier Gramercy Cellars
Every once in a while, a wine comes along that just blows me away, and the 2020 Viognier from Gramercy Cellars in Columbia Valley is one of them. While many Viogniers can be overly cloying, Gramercy Cellars has crafted a truly exceptional, balanced expression.
Each glass features vibrant aromatics of stone fruits, white peach, D’anjou pear, and apricot, complemented by tropical notes and a touch of meringue creaminess. The palate is all about balance and length, plush and inviting with just enough acidity to keep it perfectly harmonious. You’ll often find me enjoying this on a boat or at the beach. I recently ordered a bottle after trying it at L27’s wine dinner at The Westin, and it did not disappoint.
Cheers!
