What services does Beth Haley Design offer?
We do it all! We are a full-service design firm specializing in renovations to existing homes as well as customizing new homes. Our designs have an undercurrent of sustainability and aging-in-place, which allows for lifestyle changes throughout the years.
By thoughtfully selecting products and materials, we not only create environmentally friendly interiors but ensure the longevity and adaptability of your home. This way, your living space remains a true sanctuary, regardless of changes in your circumstances or abilities.
What is your design philosophy, and how does it set you apart?
I consider myself to have a highly creative approach. Designing numerous custom pieces, blending a variety of textures, styles, and colors, and collaborating with other artists and tradespeople all ignite my imagination and inspire me to explore the unusual and interesting. The diversity of each client and project presents unique challenges, which I embrace as opportunities to grow and push beyond my comfort zone. I find joy in the creative process, experimenting with unconventional ideas, and continually seeking ways to innovate.
What advice do you have for those afraid to take design risks?
Embrace something different! Instead of following the trend of the moment, choose design elements that resonate with you. Be bold and unafraid to experiment with something uniquely you. You can paint your kitchen cabinets your favorite color, wallpaper your ceiling, upholster your sofa in a bold shade, or invest in a large, eye-catching piece of colorful art. Let your space reflect your unique style and personality.
Can you share a recent favorite project?
There are favorite aspects of every project I work on. I love getting to know my clients, curating their style, and creating homes that are nurturing and personalized. One recent project that stands out is an incredible new build in Forest Hills, where the client envisioned an urban oasis. By blurring the boundaries of outdoor living with the interior spaces of the pool house, we created a retreat for the family in their own back yard.
Inside the main house, we designed the media room and a music loft with organic materials and shades of blue, and continued the indoor-outdoor aesthetic to emphasize the stunning views of the neighborhood treetops. The result is a home that feels like paradise.
What has been your most challenging project to date?
We were excited to take on the challenge of renovating a traditional ranch into a modern home in a rural setting. The homeowner wanted a masculine feel with a mix of materials, natural woods, and stone, and a connection to the outdoors. Additionally, we needed to seamlessly blend the old with the new while creating plenty of spaces for the family to gather, ease of use, and storage throughout the home.
Though working on large, long-term, complex projects creates many challenges, they are truly the most rewarding for me as a designer. Helping clients define their style, optimizing floor plans, ensuring cohesiveness throughout the home, troubleshooting during construction, and adding finishing touches all spark my creativity and allow me to take an imaginative approach to design. Creating a home that speaks to my client’s heart and functions for them personally is the best reward for the months of hard work.
Can you share one design secret with SB readers?
Most often, when a client asks What is my space missing? or Why doesn’t my space feel complete?, the answer is a lack of layering. An area rug, window treatments, pillows, art, accessories, and lighting, all in the correct proportions, allow you to add color, pattern, and texture to your home. This is your opportunity to add rhythm and repetition to the space, creating a balanced and beautiful room.
