Katie Adler and Kurt Myers may live in Nashville now, but they met in Lexington, KY, when she decided to try out a Krav Maga class (a type of martial arts and self defense). He was one of the instructors, and he asked her out after her second class. At the time, he was studying for his MCAT exam and she was working at the University of Kentucky. As smitten as they both were, they were soon tested by the trials of a long-distance relationship when Kurt enrolled in medical school in his hometown, Nashville, at Meharry Medical College. After 18 months of a long-distance relationship, they both knew that this was the real deal, and Katie relocated to Nashville to be closer to Kurt.
Although Katie and Kurt had talked about getting married, she was still caught off guard by his proposal. You see, Kurt used Katie’s brother’s 30th surprise birthday party as the perfect ruse. And yes, this double surprise meant that her brother, Jordan, thought all the secret conversations were about the impending engagement and Katie thought they were all about the surprise 30th birthday party. It ended up as a double surprise weekend for the siblings, who are best friends!
On their way to Lexington for Jordan’s surprise party, Kurt stopped at Shaker Village, a beautiful and historic place in Kentucky filled with original Shaker-built buildings. It was raining and Katie had no idea why Kurt wanted to get out of the car. Katie was not wearing the right shoes for a rainy day walk through the gravel paths in Shaker Village and started to protest, but thought better of it, as she wanted to support Kurt’s seeming spontaneity. As they walked through the village, they ran into Jordan — who happened to be there with a camera. Soon, Kurt was down on one knee proposing with a family ring from his Great- Great-Aunt Katie, which was a fitting way for the ring to be passed down.
The couple was able to celebrate with family and friends, as they had all come to town to celebrate the surprise engagement/birthday combo! The double surprise came the next day at Jordan’s party, so a festive weekend was had by all!
Fast forward to their nuptials, which took place June 6, 2015, in Franklin, TN, at Trinity View Farm, a private residence that is rented out a few times a year for weddings. Kurt’s mom, Carla Myers, is one of the former owners of The Registry in Franklin, TN, so Katie had a great resource for wedding planning! Take a look at Kurt and Katie’s wedding, planned by Big Events:
The day they got married was the same day that American Pharoah won the Triple Crown. Kurt’s father referred to this historic moment by acknowledging the Triple Crown, but assured all guests gathered at the wedding that no one was more happy on this night than his son as he married the girl of his dreams.
