More than artistry alone motivates our new FACE of Memphis. Abstract artist Alexandra Baker uses her gifts to focus on “Healing Thru Color,” an approach that allows her to share the healing process with others. And her work has certainly resonated with the public. In addition to features in British Vogue and Vanity Fair London, she recently opened her 11th solo show here in Memphis. How did your career path lead you to becoming a full-time artist?

God has led me down this path, and I couldn’t be more grateful. If you had told me 10 years ago that I would be a successful painter one day, I would have laughed. We never know what can come to fruition in our lives when we do our best to listen to our callings and follow the path the Creator has set out for us.

What has been your biggest challenge in pursuing art as a career?

I can’t be sure what my biggest challenge has been as an artist — perhaps collecting river water for paintings when the river is too high! I have nearly slipped into the water more than once.

What are some lessons you’ve learned along the way that have helped you become successful?

You must be free to create “bad art”! Only in fearlessness can true creativity shine. Always trust in yourself and your intuition. It is always important to use our wisdom and discernment in running a business.

Tell us about the concept of “Healing Thru Color.”

“Healing Thru Color” is the essence of my life’s work. God is able to reach out and heal me as I paint. He encourages me to share that healing energy with others. When I first began painting, I never considered that sharing my work publicly could benefit someone else. But I have received so much feedback from viewers and collectors that my work has opened pathways of healing for them, and even pushed a few people to tears because they were so touched.

Your 11th solo show opened on June 13. What has surprised you most about putting your art out into the world?

The biggest surprise has been the impact my work can have on other people and my community. When I am alone in my studio painting, I can feel the Divine come through me and facilitate the healing that I need at that time. It’s a very personal process, somewhat like writing in a diary or journal. When I’m creating, I’m not considering anyone but myself. The deeply personal connections viewers feel with my work continue to surprise me, time and time again. It’s amazing how God works through us all.

What is inspiring your art right now and why?

My emotions and personal healing inspire my work. Painting and yoga are my biggest points of self-care, so I indulge in them often.

My work has been featured in British Vogue and Vanity Fair London, as well as Visual Art Journal, Memphis Magazine, Canvas Rebel, Memphis Flyer, and Daily Memphian.

Where can we find you when you aren’t working?

When I’m not working, you can find me relaxing by the river, reading, and practicing yoga.

What is your best piece of advice?

Leave fear behind and lead with love.

Aside from faith, family, and friends, what are three things you can’t live without?

I could never live without my cat, Sheba, art museums, or fruit.
