What to Wear to May’s Events — The Birmingham Zoo Edition
We got wild with the animals at The Birmingham Zoo this month for a special What to Wear! Here are our style suggestions for three of May's top events.
We’re celebrating the arrival of warm weather with some vibrant, colorful and playful fashions from around the city. This month, we’ve teamed up with the style gurus at The Clothes Tree by Deborah, Tulipano and TRXi Vintage to pull together nine looks for three of May’s exciting upcoming events: Mudbugs & Music, The Magic City Wine Fest and the Birmingham Zoo’s Tails in the Trails.
Our gorgeous and talented models, Jayna Goedecke, Ashley Robertson and Liz Kerr are members of the Birmingham Zoo’s Junior Board, which is hosting the Tails in the Trails event on the final day of May. It was an absolute treat to work with these ladies and all the wonderful members of the Birmingham Zoo — including a few furry friends — to create a What to Wear as exciting as the zoo itself.
Now, let’s get to styling!
PinAshley Robertson, Jayna Goedecke and Liz Kerr are our models for this month’s What to Wear!
The 15th Annual Mudbugs & Music is back on May 4 at Cahaba Brewing Company. Attendees will enjoy crawfish from Bayou Bros., kids’ activities, a silent auction and great live music from Stephen McCullough. Proceeds from the event support the Arthritis Foundation’s mission to conquer and cure arthritis, while also raising significant funds for the Pediatric Rheumatology Program at Children’s of Alabama and UAB, which has changed the course of treatment for thousands of children with juvenile arthritis.
What to Wear: As this is a daytime, outdoor event, we suggest comfortable and fashionable selections that take a detour from the classic jean shorts and t-shirt combo. Consider going for this simple blue-and-white-striped cotton dress, this figure-flattering strapless sundress or this colorful vintage ensemble — each can be dressed up or down, depending on your personal taste, for a fashion-forward twist on casual style.

Join Cahaba Dermatology & Spa Cahaba at the Birmingham Zoo for the 3rd Annual Magic City Wine Fest. Attendees will travel through several different regions as they sip wines from all over the globe. Bites from local restaurants will be available for purchase, and live music will complete the affair. A portion of every ticket will benefit the Birmingham Zoo.
What to Wear: For this event, we suggest opting for something casual that reads sophisticated and polished. This fun jumpsuit looks beautiful on any body shape and can be worn to a number of your upcoming outings, as can this vibrant vintage tee and skirt pairing. Or, go for this colorful striped set as an on-trend ensemble that nods to the event’s playful location.

The Zoo’s exciting May events don’t stop at the Wine Fest — be sure to also join them for the 9th Annual Tails in the Trails celebration! This fabulous event will take place in the Birmingham Zoo’s signature Trails of Africa area. Enjoy live music, hors d’oeuvres, a variety of craft beers from local breweries, signature cocktails and more. Tails in the Trails is a 21+ event.
What to Wear: Attire for this event is all about what’s comfortable. Here, our models are showing off some dressier options — including a stunning orange maxi dress, a versatile white dress and a spring-appropriate floral number — but a nice pair of dark denim topped with a nice blouse is another, equally appropriate option for the evening.
