Fireworks and parades are Fourth of July staples, but some places celebrate Independence Day with a little more personality. Across the South, you can find everything from cardboard boat races to hot air balloon rides, anvil shoots, and pie-eating contests. If you’re looking to add a memorable twist to your Fourth of July celebrations this year, these quirky festivities prove that Southern towns know how to put their own spin on America’s birthday.

ALABAMA

July 3 & 4, 2026: Hot Air Balloon Rides | Gadsden, AL

For an Independence Day celebration that literally rises above the rest, Gadsden’s Freedom Festival features tethered hot air balloon rides.
