Why Hattiesburg Might Be Mississippi’s Biggest Surprise
Think you know small-town Mississippi? Think again. Hattiesburg is full of surprises — where thought-provoking museums, craft cocktails, and creative energy come together in the most delightful ways. Image: Visit Hattiesburg
The home of the University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg has long been known as a cool college town with deep Southern roots. But I recently spent a day here and quickly realized this Pine Belt city has a knack for the unexpected. Charming and creative, historic and forward-thinking, Hattiesburg is full of surprises — the kind that turn a quick visit into a “wait, we should stay longer” kind of trip.

Hattiesburg has plenty of places to stay, from well-known modern hotels to boutique inns to parks and campgrounds. I recommend the old-world elegance of Ross Mansion Bed & Breakfast, where a warm welcome and gracious interiors set the tone for a stay that feels relaxed and indulgent.
The rooms are so delightful and comfy, you might not want to leave, but don’t miss out on a walking tour of the surrounding Hattiesburg Historic Neighborhood. It’s one of the oldest in the city and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Once a month, a whimsical adventure awaits in the renovated carriage house of the mansion. The Storybook Society presents In Wonderland, an original, immersive musical performed in richly detailed surroundings. Step into Alice’s magical world for a daytime or evening show, which includes an Unbirthday Party — a yummy lunch for daytime shows or light charcuterie for evening performances.

Next, explore a downtown that blends history with a distinctly modern energy. Case in point: The Lucky Rabbit. Part vintage shop, part immersive experience, this ever-evolving space has earned a growing following for its unique inventory, nostalgic displays, and playful, Instagram-worthy installations.
Clean, bright, and wonderfully curated, it’s the kind of place where you wander in thinking you’ll browse, then leave hours later, delighted and slightly dazzled (and possibly loaded down with purchases).
Created in early 2013, The Lucky Rabbit today encompasses two big, repurposed older buildings, with a nice little play/picnic area in between. It is open only on Saturdays and Sundays, so make sure you plan your trip accordingly; this is a stop you will not want to miss.

Downtown Hattiesburg is very walkable and boasts restaurants, shops, and the beautifully restored historic Saenger Theater, where live performances and classic films make for a lovely evening. Allow some time to stroll the Historic Downtown Hattiesburg Walking Tour with interesting stops that include the “brass footsteps of Wes Fairley,” an advertising gimmick from 1903. You will also find stops on the city’s 1964 Freedom Summer Trail and Public Art Trail.

Nearby, the whimsical Hattiesburg Pocket Museum proves that even the smallest spaces can make a big impression, with tiny rotating exhibits tucked into an alleyway behind the Saenger Theater.
History lovers will find plenty to explore in the Sixth Street Museum District, home to thought-provoking sites like the African American Military Museum, the Oseola McCarty House, and Smith Drug Co. These spaces offer a deeper look at the stories and people who have shaped the city.

Hattiesburg’s creative spirit shines outside of the downtown area as well — and in one particular case, it glows. At Mohawk Steel & Glass, visitors can watch artisans at work at a 2,000-degree kiln or visit the small gallery filled with delicate examples of the glassblower’s art. Better yet, you can try your hand at glassblowing and create a one-of-a-kind keepsake. Guided by knowledgeable and friendly staff, you may just surprise yourself at your creativity!

Of course, no Southern getaway is complete without memorable meals, and Hattiesburg delivers! Grab a casual bite at Ed’s Burger Joint, where the atmosphere is as lively as the menu, or linger over coffee and conversation at Cafe de Luna, a small charmer with a cute, tiled back patio.
For breakfast, Birdhouse Cafe (known locally as Birdies) offers healthy options, while The Midtowner is a local fave with a hearty, traditional menu. For something a little different, T-Bones Records & Cafe pairs good eats with a curated vinyl selection — a combination that feels quintessentially Hattiesburg.
If browsing books while you sip tea, coffee, or specially-made soda is your jam, head over to The Author Shoppe to hang out for a while.

When evening rolls around, the city’s social scene sparkles. Sip a thoughtfully crafted cocktail at Hen House, a newer addition that’s already making waves. Enjoy a meal at Bourbon on Front, which combines subdued lighting, tasteful decor, and excellent service with a mouthwatering menu — and bourbon-forward drinks, of course!
Locals recommend Patio 44, Buschman Street Cafe, The Porter Public House, and Triangle Seafood & Po-boys. For Asian-fusion, you can’t go wrong with Big Trouble. Beer lovers won’t want to miss Southern Prohibition Brewing (better known as “SoPro”), a local favorite known for its inventive brews and welcoming vibe.
Sit awhile in the fun and relaxing taproom to sample a best-seller like the Suzy B golden ale, or expand your palate with a taproom exclusive like refreshing, fruity Sherbet Sherpa OG.

Other spots definitely worth checking out: The University of Southern Mississippi’s beautiful campus, especially when the roses are in bloom, the deservedly popular Hattiesburg Zoo, and Longleaf Trace, a 44-mile rails-to-trails project perfect for biking, running, and hiking.
In a region known for its traditions, Hattiesburg stands out for how effortlessly it blends heritage with innovation. It’s a place where you can sip coffee in a cozy café, blow your own glass art, stumble upon a hidden museum, and end the night with a craft cocktail — all in the span of a single day.
Don’t wait to discover this city full of surprises for yourself!
