A Love Letter to Thai Ni Yom: My Favorite Nashville Hidden Gem

Is this Nashville’s best-kept secret? I sure think so! This is my ode to Thai Ni Yom at L&L Market — from fiery curries to cat sake in the cutest jars, this spot has my whole heart. Who’s coming with me? Image: Jenna Bratcher

Yes, this is a shameless love letter to Thai Ni Yom, my (hands-down) favorite local Thai restaurant, so be prepared for me to wax poetic about everything from soup to noodles. But trust me, if you’re on the hunt for a bona fide Thai spot, this is it. Tucked into a bustling corner of the historic L&L Market, this family-run spot delivers the kind of flavor you can usually only find after a 20-hour flight. The food is true to its roots, bold, and prepared with oodles of love.

We actually stumbled onto Thai Ni Yom by chance. At home, we keep a mason jar filled with slips of paper, each one marked with a different international cuisine. Each month, we draw one, research the culture as a family, and then set out to find the most legitimate local spot. Thai was our inaugural pick, and we truly lucked out. From the very first meal, it was clear: Nashville has a Thai treasure on its hands.

Bangkok Roots, Nashville Heart

Thai Ni Yom is owned by a family from Bangkok, and after living in Nashville for about 10 years, they realized they were missing the kind of truly authentic Thai food they craved. So what did they do? They rolled up their sleeves and made it happen themselves. And boy, did they succeed. You can taste the care in every bite. We’re not talking “dump a jar of sauce over noodles” food. They make everything from scratch. Every. Single. Thing.

When you sit down, look for Nikki. She’s the face of the operation, often weaving through the space with a smile that makes you feel instantly at home. She might help you pick a spice level, steer you toward a dish you’ve never tried, or make sure you know to end your meal with a Thai iced coffee. Her warmth makes the food taste even better and reminds you this isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a family inviting you to their table.

The menu has something for everyone. Of course, you’ve got the classics like Pad Thai, fried rice, and lo mein. But why stop there? The crunchy spring rolls are the stuff of dreams, and don’t even get me started on the Tom Kah Gai soup. Creamy coconut broth with lemongrass and chicken … it’s the best I’ve ever had. Period.

Then there’s the Famous Basil (yes, that’s its actual name, and yes, it lives up to the hype). Think stir-fried chili and garlic with minced chicken and Thai holy basil, served with rice. It’s fiery, fragrant, and impossible to forget. The drunken noodles? Equally addictive. And if you’re feeling adventurous, dive into specials like curried duck or sweet-and-sour pork belly. Both are knockouts.

And let’s talk about the curries for a second. They have three — red, green, and massaman — and they are all to-die-for. I think my favorite might be the massaman, but it’s just so dang hard to choose. Creamy, aromatic, perfectly balanced. I could eat all three of them by the gallon.

Here’s another thing I love: you can pick your spice level for most dishes. I’m usually a solid three kind of gal — plenty of kick, but not so much that I can’t taste the flavors. But I’ll bump it up to a four if I’m feeling particularly sassy. That’s when things get real.

Cozy Vibes & Cat Sake

Part of what makes Thai Ni Yom so special is the space itself. Thanks to L&L Market’s signature style, you get cozy exposed brick, quirky art, and a vibe that feels equal parts stylish and welcoming. It’s the kind of place where you settle in, sip something delicious, and forget you’re still in Nashville.

Speaking of sipping, don’t sleep on the sake menu. My personal favorite is what I call the “Cat Sake.” (Thankfully, Nikki knows exactly what that means.) It comes in a little glass jar decorated with the brand’s poster girl and cats, and it’s so fun you’ll want to take it home and use it as a bud vase or a toothbrush holder or … something. Anything. It’s too cute to toss.

Why I’ll Never Quit This Place

Here’s the thing: every restaurant claims they “care,” and there are tons of fantastic Nashville eateries. But at Thai Ni Yom, you can actually feel the love. From the way the food is made to the way Nikki greets you with genuine warmth, this place is special.

So go. Order the soup. Order the curries. Order the Famous Basil. (Actually, just order everything; you’ll thank me later.) Just keep in mind it’s only open Wednesday through Sunday. Oh! And remember to choose your spice wisely. It’s the real deal. You’ve been warned.
