Iβve always thought of the term βfashionβ as an industry, a unifying experience, a collaboration of great minds, and the tides of trends that come and go. βStyle,β on the other hand, is something that I believe to be more innate β a unique part of each of us. I really like how Lauren Hutton phrased it: βFashion is something thatβs offered four times a year by designers. And style is what you choose.β
As a stylist, itβs part of my job to nurture and prioritize my clientsβ personal style above all else, but the importance of trends canβt be ignored. Fashion trends act as a reflection of our current moment in history and are affected by many cultural and economic factors. Acknowledging and even participating in fashion trends can connect us to the present and make our wardrobes feel inspired and current.
With that said, I want to slap a βwarning labelβ on all information surrounding trends: Not all trends are for everyone, and there should never be any pressure to adapt one to your own wardrobe.
One of the beautiful things about fashion trends is that if you donβt resonate with any this season, thereβs always a fresh batch right around the corner! Like clockwork, there are always new trends to consider, so please donβt feel the need to incorporate the ones you donβt love!
The rule of thumb I tend to follow when identifying trends is, βCan it be spotted on the runways three or more times?β And with that in mind, Iβve done this yearβs homework for you! Letβs check out some of the top trends from the Spring/Summer β23 shows that took place during fashion month (when New York, London, Milan, and Paris fashion weeks all occur).
Trend 1: Sheer
Transparent and ethereal fabrics were seen throughout many designerβs shows. While this might sound like an intimidating or overtly sexy trend to try, I think it can be styled in more approachable or playful ways.

Trend 2: Tassels & Fringe
This makes my Nashville heart so happy! Fringe and tassels arenβt just for β90s country stars anymore.

Trend 3: Hooded Dresses
We saw this trend emerge this last fall, and it appears to be going strong through spring. I love the element of drama and Grace Jonesβs influence.

Trend 4: Lime Green
Ready to match your margarita? Take a sip of this trend by going all in with a monochromatic set or, more subtly, by adding an electric bag or shoe.

Time to try out your own trend-spotting! Over the next few months, I bet youβll notice some of these trends in your favorite retail shops.
