FACES of Nashville: Miranda Whitcomb, Our Queen of 12South

We admire Miranda Whitcomb not only because she is simply so nice, engaging and creative, but her vision for 12South has us both convinced that it is the one of the hippest places in all of Nashville.

We admire Miranda Whitcomb not only because she is simply so nice, engaging and creative, but because her vision for 12South has contributed to the transformation of this once fringe neighborhood into one of Nashville’s trendiest spots. We have found ourselves more than once commenting that the uber-walkable and convenient 12South, with boutiques, galleries, restaurants and more, would be a serious contender of a neighborhood if we were looking to move. Miranda and her husband Mike are the force behind Frothy Monkey, Burger Up and, now, LB’s MarketHouse. Together, they have become one heck of a power-couple on this very happening side of town.

If you have not taken the time to check out 12South, make a pledge to do so this summer. It’s a great place to meet up with friends or take the whole family.

Where did you grow up?

Ruston, Louisiana

When and why did you move to Nashville?

2002, just after Landon’s father and I were married. We moved here from Boulder, CO. He wanted to pursue a music career.

What is your favorite meal to cook at home?

I should be honest….rarely do I cook.  Sadly, if I do, it’s Amy’s deluxe mac-n-cheese, mixed veggies or pancakes. I did make a good roast slow cooked in an iron pot recently, though.

What is the greatest piece of advice you have been given?

The only person you can change is yourself.

Any fears?

I can’t make everyone happy every time.

What books can be found on your bedside table?

The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski, Tanuki’s Gift by Tim Myers (read with my son), Funeral for a Stranger by Becca Stevens, several Harry Potter books (more bedtime reading with my son).

Favorite thing to do on a Saturday night?

Since my husband, Michael, always works on Saturday night, I love to get in bed with a stack of magazines, all 4 of our dogs, my son and his choice of a movie (within reason). We all agree it’s called “sweet time.”

Thing you are most looking forward to in May?

Spiffing up the Burger Up patio and spending some much needed attention on my own front yard. Also, the Sevier Park Famers’ Market.

What’s your favorite thing about 12South, if it’s possible to even wrap into words?

I have to say the sense of community.  People who live here really seem to love living here. It’s so full of character.  I personally love the fact the woman across the street from me has lived in her house since 1943. She has some stories to tell for sure! Then there are a couple of new families, really cool to be a part of that.

What is your “must-have” purchase for summer 2011?

Comfortable high wedge sandals. I think I’ve found them – by Robert Clergerie. They look good and I can work in them all day long. A new pair of imogene+willie jeans in wheat.

What is your favorite hangout spot in Nashville?

That’s a tough question, as I’m usually at Frothy Monkey in the morning, Burger Up during the day and most likely, home at night. I really enjoy City House on the rare night out.

Favorite vacation spot?

My family and I just visited Tamarindo, Costa Rica for the first time. It was outstanding – culturally rich and a lovely beach.

Do you have a playlist for a dinner party or a great workout that you can share with our readers?

Not really, although I do love Gary Wright’s “Love is Alive.”

Name three things you can’t live without (excluding friends, family and God):

1) Tweezers 2) Joe at Marathon Fitness- he helps keep me motivated and gets my day off to a good start. 3) Currently, the marathon burger on top of a holiday salad at Burger Up. I often eat this twice a day.
