What if we told you that the answer for smooth, flawless skin and beautiful hair was right in front of you — or, should we say, right inside of you — the whole time? If it sounds too good to be true, it’s not — thanks to the help of a popular skincare procedure called platelet-rich plasma, or PRP. It’s a treatment that can help with sun damage, wrinkles, thinning hair, deep facial lines, stretch marks and so much more. And the best part is, the products used come right from your own body.
If it seems PRP is the buzzword that’s on the tip of everyone’s tongue lately, you’re not imagining it; clients love the results and the fact that it’s an all-natural approach they can comfortably add to their self-care arsenal. The simple, three-step process can radically rejuvenate your appearance in a very safe way because you’re essentially using your own natural elements without the addition of any foreign products.
To dig a little deeper into this fascinating procedure, we spoke with two experts from Image Surgical Arts, a Nashville cosmetic surgery and medspa facility. Here, Dr. Brady Harris, triple-board-certified cosmetic surgeon, and Kristin Torres, FNP-C, board-certified nurse practitioner, share their insights on and the benefits of platelet-rich plasma.
PinDr. Brady Harris is a triple-board-certified cosmetic surgeon, and Kristin Torres, FNP-C, is a board-certified nurse practitioner, both at Image Surgical Arts.
“Technically speaking, PRP is a cosmetic treatment in which your practitioner takes a sample of your own blood and spins it down with a device called a centrifuge, in order to extract the component of the blood that contains your own growth factors and proteins,” Dr. Harris explains.
If it sounds a little scary and invasive, our experts assure us it’s anything but. “The recovery requires no downtime, except for the chance of possible bruising or swelling due to the use of needles,” Kristin explains. “There are absolutely no side effects, and since we use the patient’s own blood that we spin down to extract the growth factors, there is no chance of rejection or reactions.” To provide the most information possible, Image Surgical Arts has created their own video series, which includes an episode explaining exactly what PRP is and how it can help you.
It gets better: According to Dr. Harris, another way to use PRP is through a combination therapy using PRP plus hyaluronic acid filler. This combination can help you achieve the best, most effective jaw-dropping results. “This procedure allows for the filler to achieve the desired look of plumpness and decrease fine lines and scarring, while the PRP works magically under the skin to stimulate your own growth of collagen to create long-term results,” Dr. Harris adds.
Besides restoring your skin, platelet-rich plasma can also be used for a variety of other issues, including treating hair loss and brightening up the eyes, just to name a few.
“Unfortunately hair loss can occur in any person, male or female,” Kristin says. “In order to help reverse the age of time, we extract your own platelet-rich plasma and inject it directly into the scalp.” This treatment can also be used as a preventative method to proactively prevent hair loss. According to Kristin, your own growth factors and proteins help to rejuvenate the hair follicles and stimulate new growth, which increases the thickness and texture of your hair.

If you’re planning to use PRP for hair growth purposes, our experts recommend starting with a clean scalp free of any gels or sprays. They explain that the procedure is slightly uncomfortable because it ultimately is needles going into the scalp. But the good news is that they use needle tips that have offer multi- delivery, allowing the procedure time to be cut into half.
As far as your eyes go, who doesn’t want to their eyes to appear brighter and look less tired? PRP can help with that as well. “Your own growth factors are extracted and injected with a small needle underneath the delicate tissue of the under eye,” Kristin says. This process is used in a series of treatments to better brighten up those dark under-eye circles and to also decrease the fine lines and wrinkles under the eye.
