From beloved Texas news anchor to the voice of Morgan's, Leslie Mouton has a knack for telling the stories that matter most. Image: Morgan's
As one of San Antonio’s most beloved news anchors, Leslie Mouton spent more than two decades telling other people’s stories. Then she rewrote her own. Today, Leslie serves as the Creative Media Director for Morgan’s, a nonprofit organization that’s changing the world for people with disabilities.
A breast cancer survivor who made national headlines for anchoring the news while bald, Leslie is raising awareness about the programs Morgan’s offers that go beyond its famed theme park, Morgan’s Wonderland, to include sports, camps, and a new Inclusion Institute. It’s a fresh chapter in Leslie’s story, and one she is honored to tell.

You retired from the news business after a long and illustrious career. What was it about Morgan’s that drew you out of retirement?
When I learned about Morgan’s mission of inclusion for everyone, it hit me right in the heart. After decades of telling other people’s stories, I wanted the next chapter of my life to be about living a story that mattered. Morgan’s allowed me to use my skills to share stories of hope, courage, and unconditional love. It’s such an honor to be part of something that is literally changing the world.
Storytelling is storytelling, whether it’s on television or in nonprofit media. My years in news taught me how to connect with people quickly, find the heart of a story, and communicate in a way that moves others. Those skills are invaluable at Morgan’s because our stories truly have the power to change hearts and minds.
What is the story of Morgan’s?
It began with Morgan Hartman, who was born with physical and cognitive disabilities, and her family’s dream to create a place where people of all abilities could come together. That dream became Morgan’s Wonderland, the world’s first ultra-accessible theme park. It has since grown into an entire inclusion movement, with Morgan’s Inspiration Island, Morgan’s Sports, Morgan’s Camp, and Morgan’s MAC (Multi-Assistance Center).
We recently launched Morgan’s Inclusion Institute, which will allow us to take our message global and spark cultural change by sharing our best practices to make places more accessible and inclusive. Next year, we will launch Morgan’s Hotel, Morgan’s Fitness Center, and Morgan’s Wonder Care.
What does a day in the life of a Creative Media Director look like?
Every day is different, and that’s what I love about it! One day, I might be filming a story about a family’s first visit to the park, or creating our next commercial, and the next, I’m editing a video, planning content, or brainstorming new ways to share Morgan’s mission. My role is really about storytelling and showing the heart of Morgan’s through the families, staff, and volunteers who make this place magical. We also now have a broadcast studio where we create original content for our weekly Inclusion Unlimited segment on our YouTube channel.
What is the biggest misconception about Morgan’s?
People often think it is just a theme park, but it’s so much more than that. Morgan’s is a movement for inclusion. It’s about creating a world where people of all abilities feel seen, valued, and included, not just in our parks, but in every community. That’s the heart of what we do.
Your battle with breast cancer drew national attention when you went live on-air without your wig. Did that experience change your perspective?
Absolutely! Going through breast cancer stripped me down to the things that really matter, like kindness, empathy, and authenticity. Taking off that wig on-air was terrifying, but it was also freeing. It taught me the power of vulnerability and the importance of being real. That same spirit is what I see every day at Morgan’s. Our families face challenges with courage and love. It is a constant reminder that beauty is found in our humanity, not our perfection.

What is your favorite event that Morgan’s hosts?
Our Snowball Run, Walk, or Stroll is pure magic. The entire park transforms into a winter wonderland complete with snow (something you don’t often see in South Texas), lights, and laughter. Watching families of all abilities experience the event together is unforgettable.
What is your favorite ride at Morgan’s Wonderland?
Hands down, it’s our newest addition, Joy’s Happy Swing. It looks like it isn’t much, but hang on, because it’s a thrill ride. A close second is our carousel. There’s something timeless and joyful about it. It brings out the kid in everyone.
What is your biggest dream for Morgan’s?
To see it continue to expand its reach to inspire other communities and even countries to create places of true inclusion. I’d love to see Morgan’s become not just a place, but a model for how the world can become more inclusive and compassionate.

You changed careers in your mid-50s. What advice would you offer someone who wants to change paths midlife?
You’re never too old to reinvent yourself. If you feel that tug in your heart, listen to it! Growth doesn’t stop with age. In fact, this can be the best time to start something new. Be brave enough to begin again. I never would have imagined building a broadcast studio and launching a new segment at 60 years old, but here I am, and loving it!
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
My dad always told me, “You can’t control what happens to you, but you can control how you respond.” That advice has carried me through every challenge, from cancer to career changes. Attitude truly is everything.
When you aren’t working, where can we find you?
Boxing! It’s my favorite workout and stress reliever. Otherwise, I’m probably spending time with my family, enjoying a good glass of red wine while watching a movie, or hanging with my dog, Boo. All while wearing cozy socks, of course.
Thanks for chatting with us, Leslie!
