When it comes to the Kentucky Derby, there’s no such thing as underdressed. And now that the season is upon us, it’s time to start planning your looks! We turned to a few local experts to dish on timeless Derby dressing elements, new trends for this year, fascinator tips, and essentials to pack for a successful day at the races.
Derby Elements that Never Go Out of Style
There’s no question that Derby style transcends seasonal trends. And in general, our panel of experts agrees that the overarching theme is COLOR.
“You can never go wrong with color at Derby,” says Jordan Young of Rodes For Him | For Her. “Obviously, we see color trends come and go, but there is never a color that is off limits for Derby week.”

Jessica Schickli, of Hat Haven, agrees. She says classic color combinations (think hot pink and kelly green, black and white, or yellow with navy) are perfect pairings that never miss.
Braidi Huecker, of Frances B Hats, says she has been getting a lot of requests from clients for colors in their seasonal palettes. If you’re not sure what yours is (or what that even means), she recommends a color analysis by House of Color, followed by a trip to Surprise Lily, where clothing is seasonally tagged to remove the guesswork.

Stephanie Reilly of Surprise Lily adds that traditional looks (like feminine, polished silhouettes, midi lengths, and tailored pieces with a defined waist) will always stand the test of time. And remember, they don’t call it “The Run for the Roses” for nothing! “Florals remain a staple,” she says. This includes “everything from soft, romantic prints to bold, oversized blooms, along with classic spring textures like lace, eyelet, and linen blends.”

Kirra Russell, of Trunk & Hutch, echoes the sentiment about traditional looks, adding that Jackie O-inspired pieces remain the gold standard. “Understated, timeless choices never go out of style and continue to make their way to the track every year,” she says. She adds that achieving that classic look is a matter of balance. “If you’re drawn to a bold print for your dress, it’s best to complement it with a subtle headpiece. On the flip side, if you want your headwear to stand out, keep your outfit low-key and natural.”
Fascinator Tips
Fascinators are as much a staple of the Derby as the thoroughbreds. Fun fact: In the U.S., most designers place the statement piece on the right side, since we look left to watch the race. In Europe, the horses run from the right. Always make sure your headpiece is designed and worn accordingly, so it doesn’t block your vision!

Ashley Shadburne, of The Guilded Brim, explains that a head-turning fascinator is about composition and originality. It’s all about the unexpected color combination, the way materials are layered, the balance between structure and movement, or a small, thoughtful detail that feels entirely new.

For example, a perfectly placed cluster of hand-dyed florals can be more striking than something oversized, and a sculptural shape with negative space can feel more modern and elevated than something packed with volume. “The pieces that truly stop people aren’t always the widest brim or the tallest spray of feathers,” she says. “They’re the ones that make someone pause for a second and think, ‘Wait … what is that?’ That moment comes from intention, not scale.”
Braidi adds that the best way to guarantee the perfect fascinator fit is to try on several. “Think about how you want to move around for the day,” she advises. “Some hats are overwhelming; others are too small … Also, think about what colors look great on you, and don’t be afraid to use complementary colors and not exact matches to your outfit.”

Your desired hairstyle for the day also helps you choose a hat or fascinator, as less hair is visible with a hat. Another option is a hatinator, a wide brim on a headband, which offers the best of both worlds.
New Trends for Derby 2026
Jessica anticipates seeing more sculptural, statement pieces on the track this year. “Think bold shapes and a bit of that gravity-defying, architectural vibe,” she says, adding that there’s also lots of beading and sparkle coming through for a little extra glam. “And don’t be surprised if you spot some vintage-inspired pieces in the mix, too. It’s all about classic style with a fresh twist.”

Kirra expects a more eclectic mix of styles in 2026 and explains that Derby fashion is more flexible than ever. She adds that while local tradition leans heavily into dressing up more as Derby week progresses, track-goers are starting to shake things up.
“We’re outfitting clients for Tuesday with the same flair as Friday or Saturday,” she says. “Even in the infield, where things tend to be more casual, our guests are showing up in headpieces and dresses. Coordinating men’s bow ties or lapels with ladies’ outfits is a fun touch we love, adding extra polish to group looks.”
While classic colors are always in style, Stephanie says this year’s combos are unexpected, with shades like coral and lavender or pink and orange playing together. “We’re also seeing more coordinated sets, structured bodices, and square necklines, which give a modern edge while still feeling classic,” she tells us. “Overall, it’s less about over-the-top and more about curated, standout pieces.”
Jordan adds that there has been a movement away from shorter dresses over the past few years, but this year, they are making a comeback. “At market, I bought and saw so many more great, short options that I’ve been missing,” she shares, adding that brown, neutrals, and pastels are big colors this year.
Your Derby Day Survival Kit
Seasoned Derby-goers know that you can’t play the odds when it comes to the weather at Churchill Downs, so it’s best to hedge your bets by coming prepared for anything — rain or shine.
“We’re recommending chic, weather-ready layers like a clear or neutral rain jacket so your outfit can still shine through,” Stephanie says. “Oversized sunglasses are both stylish and practical, and a small crossbody or top-handle bag keeps things hands-free. The goal is to look polished but be prepared for a full day.”

Kirra adds that if you plan to pack a portable poncho, be sure to pick yours up early, as they will surely sell out by Derby Day. “And extra bobby pins are a must to keep your fascinator in place, especially if the wind picks up,” she says.
It’s also wise to remember that the horses aren’t the only ones getting a workout. You’ll be doing lots of walking, so the right footwear is key. Think chunky heels, wedges, or dressy flats for comfort. And if you plan to be in the infield, sneakers or boots are your best bet. “If you want to wear a different type of shoe, I would suggest bringing a pair of cheap flip flops to put on and wear around before the main race,” Jordan advises.

While there are common threads that run through Derby Day style, there are also plenty of ways to express your individuality, and you don’t have to spend a fortune. In fact, one of the best things you can wear, according to Kirra, is something you already own and doesn’t cost a thing. “Bring your smile,” she says. “Confidence is always the best accessory.”
