Clermont

Perched among rolling hills (a rare treat in Florida), Clermont makes a delightful day trip. One of its most iconic stops is The Citrus Tower, a 22-story structure offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape — a tribute to Central Florida’s citrus heritage.

Bonus: you’ll also find the cutest coffee shop in the lobby, Citrus Coffee Company. Before heading up to enjoy the incredible views, grab an espresso, cappuccino, or one of their signature flavored lattes.

Wine lovers will want to stop at Lakeridge Winery & Vineyards, where tours and tastings provide the perfect blend of education and indulgence. When it’s time to eat, The Crooked Spoon serves fresh, inventive fare in a relaxed atmosphere, making it a favorite among locals and visitors alike.

Howey-in-the-Hills

Just down the road, Howey-in-the-Hills charms visitors with its Spanish Revival architecture and laid-back ambiance. A perfect home base for exploring is the Mission Resort and Club, where you can unwind in style — and start your day with an outstanding breakfast.

Don’t miss The Howey Mansion, a beautifully restored estate offering tours that transport you to a bygone era. Once the home of town founder and citrus magnate William J. Howey, this 24-room mansion brings the past to sparkling life.

For a lighter bite or a tasty treat, Yahala Bakery is a local treasure known for its German-inspired specialties and irresistible pastries.

Mount Dora

Mount Dora seems made for strolling. The downtown area is alive with antique shops, quirky boutiques, and inviting cafés that beckon you to slow down. Nature lovers will be spoiled for choice. Simpson Cove is a serene, half-acre waterfront park home to fishing piers, boat ramps, and a spot on the Florida Citrus Trail.

Adjacent Grantham Point Park is home to one of Mt. Dora’s most famous landmarks: the Mount Dora Lighthouse, one of only a few freshwater lighthouses in the state. A short stroll will then take you to Palm Island Park, an eight-acre natural preservation area with picnic pavilions, trails, and a scenic wood boardwalk winding through old-growth trees and abundant wildlife.

When hunger strikes, Pisces Rising serves fresh seafood and Southern-inspired dishes with lakefront views that are nothing short of spectacular. For something more casual, The Frog & Monkey Pub is cozy and welcoming.

To make the most of your trip, stay a night or two at the Magnolia Inn Bed & Breakfast, where the breakfast is delightful and the accommodations are pure comfort.

Tavares

Known as “America’s Seaplane City,” Tavares combines history with outdoor adventure. Start with Adventure Outdoor Paddle, a woman-owned outfitter that leads guided tours of the nearby Dora Canal, a pristine waterway where you’ll likely spot herons, turtles, and maybe even an alligator or two.

History buffs will love the Lake County Historical Museum, located inside the courthouse, as well as the smaller — but equally fascinating — Tavares History Museum inside a restored train depot. Ask for a guided tour; you won’t be disappointed. As an added bonus, both of these historical treasures are free of charge.

When it’s time to refuel, head to BTW, where burgers, tacos, and waffles make up a menu as fun as it sounds. And if you linger into the evening, the sunset over Lake Dora is the perfect finale to your day.

At Adventure Outdoor Paddle, owner Katrina Aho offers both rentals and guided tours through the scenic Dora Canal. “The canal system is home to a variety of flora, birds, turtles, and gators,” she tells us. “I see it every day, but it is so special to see it through the eyes of people who experience it for the first time. One of my biggest joys is getting people out in nature.” Image: Facebook

In 1914, Tavares saw the first recorded seaplane flight off Lake Eustis. Today, the lakeside town is home to a seaplane base, as well as for-hire tours and excursions. Image: Discover Lake County
