When the 2026 FIFA World Cup plotted its soccer invasion of the United States, plenty of international fans decided to make the trip. But few are documenting it quite like Freddy (@FreddyLA7), a German soccer superfan with more than 320,000 followers on X who turned his tournament travel into a full-blown Southern road trip. And, yes, the internet can’t look away.

It’s the positive, fun distraction we’re all craving: an adult man discovering the South with all the wide-eyed enthusiasm we sometimes forget in a jaded world.

With a budget flight into Atlanta, a handwritten route map, and an β€œup for anything” attitude, he’s racked up millions of views in just the past week. This is not a journalist discovering the South. This is the β€œevery man” discovering the South, which makes it that much better. As one X user said, β€œFreddy’s one of us.”

The trip started in Atlanta, and then he kept going

Freddy flew in cheaply and locked in tickets for several games, including Germany vs. Ivory Coast (in Toronto), Portugal matches, and Argentina vs. Iceland. He then started working his way through the South, state by state. His route update to Houston alone pulled 10 million views.

The response was exactly what you’d expect from Southerners: a flood of recommendations, warm welcomes, and no shortage of opinions about where to eat.

Alabama blew his mind

Reaching the state line, Freddy posted the kind of update that only a true road tripper could write: all caps, multiple exclamation points, and pure joy.

Maybe we’ll all look at our state welcome signs a little differently this summer!

Then came Jordan-Hare Stadium

A stop in Auburn gave Freddy his first taste of SEC stadium culture, which can be a shock even for Americans. It’s intense! And his reaction, posted with video and racking up four million views, says more than any stadium tour brochure ever could. Auburn, get ready for a surge of applicants!

For context, Freddy has been to a lot of stadiums across Europe and beyond. This is not a casual compliment.

Southern hospitality, exposed to the world

The post that sent Freddy’s trip into viral territory (with 84,000 likes and 2.5 million views) wasn’t about soccer at all. It was about a hotel receptionist who did something the South just does.

This was normal behavior for us, but now the world was watching and commenting.

The soundtrack of the South

Between the stadiums and the state lines, Freddy discovered something on the radio that turned into a full-on obsession.

Ella Langley, an Alabama native, has been one of country music’s fastest-rising artists over the past couple of years. I’m sure her management team is overjoyed, as it looks like her fanbase is now Europe-wide.

There’s still time to follow along!

As of this week, Freddy and his crew are moving toward Houston for Germany’s match, with more stops, more games, and more posts to come. He’s already teased a return to Atlanta if Germany or Portugal make the semifinal.

Follow along at @FreddyLA7 β€” and if you happen to spot a group of jersey-wearing Germans somewhere between Auburn and Houston, maybe offer them a ride and give some good restaurant suggestions!
