The Once-in-a-Lifetime Art Exhibit Coming to Mobile

If you’re scouting anchor events for an upcoming weekend or day trip — or mapping out a road trip through Alabama — this once-in-a-lifetime exhibit needs to be on your radar.
Beginning September 1, 2026, the Mobile Museum of Art will debut GATEWAY: From Graffiti to Gallery, bringing together pieces from iconic street artists Banksy, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf, and KAWS. The exhibition marks the first time these works have been assembled in this way, and you can see it exclusively in Mobile.

That lineup alone is enough to make the trip worthwhile, but the exhibition’s scale is what really makes GATEWAY remarkable. The presentation features 28 paintings, including a room-sized installation by Kenny Scharf, all pulled from the Masterworks Foundation collection in New York.
“Truly, any museum would be shouting from the rooftop about having one work of art by any of these artists, or a small handful,” says Jon Carfagno, Executive Director of the Mobile Museum of Art. “This exhibition is going to be 28 total paintings, including a room-sized installation by Kenny Scharf.”
This is a rare opportunity to see works by five of the most influential artists to emerge from the graffiti and street art movements in one place.

From the Streets to the Gallery
GATEWAY: From Graffiti to Gallery traces the evolution of graffiti from an unauthorized form of public expression into an artistic language that has profoundly influenced contemporary art. Rather than attempting to tell the entire history of the graffiti movement, the exhibition focuses on the ways its visual language shaped the work of these five artists.

Visitors will see the distinctive marks of each artist’s practice: Basquiat’s cryptic symbols and text, Haring’s vibrant subway art, Scharf’s exuberant pop-surrealism, KAWS’ interventions with commercial imagery, and Banksy’s provocative stencils. The exhibition also explores ideas of scale, accessibility, and cultural commentary that connect their work back to the origins of graffiti.

Put This on Your Calendar
GATEWAY: From Graffiti to Gallery opens September 1, 2026, and runs through September 1, 2027, giving art lovers plenty of opportunities to plan a visit. But considering the caliber of the artists involved — and the rarity of seeing Basquiat, Haring, Scharf, KAWS, and Banksy represented together, all in one place — we’d say this is one to make a destination out of.
Bonus points if you can plan your visit around the first Thursday of the month! For the duration of the exhibit, a different member of the MMoA team will host a guided tour of the works on display, offering their personal perspective on the exhibit.
