First Impression: Liberty Common

If you can barely keep track of Nashville’s growing food scene, welcome to the club. With so many restaurants to visit, you may find it overwhelming, but we’re going to narrow down your options and make it easy. Definitely check out Liberty Common.

Located on First Avenue adjacent to Ascend Amphitheater and Lower Broadway, this French brasserie-meets-Southern hospitality rests conveniently in the middle of the energetic downtown scene while also being something of a quiet getaway. The patio overlooks Riverfront Park and Ascend so you can enjoy cocktails or espresso with a view. There’s even easy parking (a very rare commodity these days).

We were lucky enough to attend Liberty Common’s grand opening — here’s what we thought:

The first thing that caught our eye at Liberty Common was the exterior. The glass walls gave us a (literal) window into a scene from a 1920s film. The patio lined the exterior with sophisticated blue chairs and European-style café tables underneath the softly lit, pink “Liberty Common” sign. Even the architecture sets this eatery apart from other restaurants. You could feel the good vibes’ from Liberty Common even on the streets. Before even walking inside, we were already tapping our toes to the the band’s jazz tunes!

We were instantly amazed at the use of space in Liberty Common. Each area naturally flowed into one another from the greeting space to the bar to the band space to the dining tables. The interior walls were either a gorgeous tile or floral wallpaper. Frosted glass walls separated the kitchen from the main dining area with little French phrases peppered on the panes, such as aimez beaucoup or “love a lot.” The French atmosphere definitely made us forget we were in the heart of Music City.

We fell in love with Liberty Common’s interior, not to mention the gorgeous details on every square inch. From the brass-framed bar down to each object on the bookshelves, we found ourselves obsessed with every nook and cranny of this place. Liberty Common is an aesthetic lover’s dream.

When we thought this soirée couldn’t get any better, we were blown away by the food and drinks. Chefs Jeffrey Chambless Rhodes and Jessica Collins passed around amuse-bouches, including oysters, fried chicken and creme pastries to name a few. We thought these little bites were a perfect French-Southern fusion, and we can’t wait to come back for the full menu! The bar scene also offered sophisticated tastes. With cocktails prepared by Beverage Director Dan King, guests were able to taste the refined but simple flavors of a French brasserie. Our tastebuds were in flavor heaven!

One event goer described Liberty Common as “casually sophisticated, elegantly relaxed, fancily laid-back … I wish I spoke French!”

We loved feeling like we stepped into a French brasserie while still being surrounded by that classy Southern hospitality we all know and love. We’re already planning our next visit to Nashville’s little French nook!
