Meet the Happiest Horses on Earth: A Look at Disney’s Tri-Circle-D Ranch

Tri-Circle-D Ranch offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse of Disney magic on horseback. Home to the horses seen in parades, carriage rides, and Main Street traditions, the working ranch blends Florida ranching heritage with a little Disney enchantment. Image: Kimberly Stroh

Before the magic of Cinderella Castle, the thrills of Space Mountain, or the swashbuckling adventures of Pirates of the Caribbean, Owen and Dolly Pope were building Tri-Circle-D Ranch, a hidden gem where Disney guests can get a behind-the-scenes look at the resort’s horses and equestrian traditions.

At Walt Disney’s request, the Popes relocated from Disneyland in California to help train the horses and prepare for the opening of the new Florida park. The couple retired in 1975, but their influence is still easy to spot, from the horses that remain part of Disney traditions to a window on Main Street, U.S.A. bearing Owen Pope’s name.

The Equine Experience

Tri-Circle-D Ranch is one of Walt Disney World’s most culturally rich corners, but guests often overlook it. That changed in 2019 when the old ranch, barn, and visitor area were torn down to make room for the nature-oriented Disney Lakeside Lodge. The new, expanded complex reopened in July of 2020, complete with an updated horse barn … that’s twice the size of the original!

The larger facility accommodated more horses and offered interactive guest experiences, including play areas, pony rides, and other family-friendly activities. In addition to housing β€œThe Happiest Horses on Earth,” you’ll find plenty of historical and cultural touches for a combination of equine entertainment and education.

Working Horse Ranch

The ranch is currently home to nearly 100 horses, each one contributing to Disney’s daily magic, from the famous park parades to stagecoach and carriage rides. These animals are performers who must be β€œshow-ready” at all times, and Cast Members take great pride in keeping the horses’ coats, manes, and tack in accordance with the company’s high standards.

Tri-Circle-D Ranch provides a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with breeds like Appaloosas, Clydesdales, and Arabians, and to see firsthand the work that goes into the daily care of these majestic animals.

True to Disney tradition, storytelling is woven into every detail of the stables, transforming a simple barn visit into a deeply immersive experience. For example, in the tackroom, you’ll find a display of decorative harnesses worn by the horses that pull Cinderella’s carriage for weddings, while a Blacksmith Shop lets you watch as farriers craft horseshoes. You might even see a horse get shod!

If you’re looking for something more hands-on, saddle up. Shetland pony rides are available to younger guests under 80 pounds, while visitors ages nine and up can book a horseback ride through the woodland area. Carriage rides and holiday sleigh rides offer family fun for all ages.

SB Hot Tip: While there are charges for rides, access to the Tri-Circle-D Ranch does not require a ticket to any of the Orlando-area Disney parks.Β

For the Cast Members who work the ranch daily, one of the greatest rewards of the job is the wide-eyed wonder on the faces of young visitors the first time they see one of these magnificent animals up close. But beyond the magic of these moments, Cast Members are passionate about instilling a love of equine husbandry in the next generation, turning a five-minute pony ride into a lifelong appreciation for horses and their care.

Coming Full Circle

Kissimmee, Florida, home to much of Walt Disney World, is actually known as the β€œcow capital” of the Sunshine State. And in fact, ranching has been part of the area’s identity since the 1500s. When Tri-Circle-D Ranch reopened, it did so with a commitment to honoring that heritage while embracing the future.

Preserving that connection to Florida’s ranching culture was important to Walt Disney. A horse owner and avid polo player, he was also a member of the prestigious Los Rancheros Visitadores riding club. He even owned the horse featured in the original Zorro television series.

While horses played a role in Disneyland in Anaheim, California, Disney envisioned an even bigger place for them in what he called β€œthe Florida project.” Some of his earliest plans for Walt Disney World included a campground with stables and horse accommodations, reflecting a passion that would help shape Tri-Circle-D Ranch for generations to come.

An entire section of the ranch is dedicated to celebrating Walt’s love of all things equestrian. There, you’ll find displays of some of his personal items, along with photos of Walt with horses. One of the more memorable items is a sketch of a seven-year-old Walt creating a crayon rendering of a neighbor’s horse. The masterpiece earned the future multi-millionaire his first commission β€”Β a nickel!

From Horses to Dragons

One of the most unusual sites at the Tri-Circle-D Ranch is not a horse β€” it’s a dragon! The 1907 Dragon Calliope is a twenty-whistle steam-powered organ purchased by Walt Disney in the 1950s. It, along with several circus wagons, was restored for the Mickey Mouse Club Circus parade, where it was drawn by a team of black Percheron horses.Β

After Disneyland’s 25th anniversary, the Dragon Calliope was repainted in shades of silver and blue and pulled by the Percheron horses to Walt Disney World, where it appeared as part of the park’s Tencennial celebration. For three days, it served as a showstopper, following floats and a 1,076-piece marching band to bring the parade to a close.

Once again retired, the majestic instrument resides behind glass in the stables at Tri-Circle-D Ranch β€” but the press of a button lets you hear a sample of its mighty sound.

The Tri-Circle-D Ranch is more than a barn full of parade ponies β€” it’s a living tribute to Central Florida’s frontier roots. Amid the parks’ constant changes, the ranch reflects Walt Disney’s authentic take on old-Florida rural life, offering one of the most immersive, unscripted guest experiences at Florida’s beloved park.
