Summer brings lots of reasons to celebrate, but few are as tasty as National Hot Dog Month in July. To celebrate, we’re rounding up the best Louisville hot dogs, along with must-try orders and a few unexpected destinations that are sure to earn top dog status.
Derby Dogs
Neighborhood: Cherokee Triangle
More Info: derbydogs.dog
Since setting up shop last year in the Bardstown Road space formerly occupied by Joy Luck, Derby Dogs has become one of the hottest spots in town. Inspired by California-based Pink’s Hot Dogs, every dog on the menu is meant to be decked out and a little wild. Jumbo, Polish, or plant-based picks are available for all nine gourmet options, which are served on locally made buns from La Pâtisserie Française.

Derby Dogs also offers burgers, sandwiches, and salads, but we’d recommend The Pickled Prince, a Chicago‑style fan‑favorite dog topped with relish, a pickle spear, onions, tomato, sport peppers, mustard, and celery salt. It’s the real deal!
Red Top Hot Dogs
Neighborhood: Phoenix Hill
More Info: redtopdogs.com
Tucked in a corner of Mashup Food Hall, Red Top Hot Dogs prides itself on a made-from-scratch menu featuring locally sourced ingredients. Ordering a Red Top hot dog is a two-part process: First, choose from local pork bratwurst, Kentucky Legend all-beef hot dog, Wagyu beef hot dog, bacon-wrapped Wagyu beef hot dog, or Beyond vegan sausage. Next, select a topping style, ranging from Louisville Beer Cheese to the “Germantown,” which features bacon, sauerkraut, and bourbon molasses.
All dogs are served on a pretzel roll, with a gluten-free bun available. Try the best-selling Nirvana, with cream cheese, fried onions, fresh jalapeños, and jalapeño jam. Heavenly!

YachtSea
Neighborhood: Butchertown
More Info: yachtseabar.com
YachtSea officially set sail on North Wenzel Street last year, and it went full steam ahead with the theme. Every bit of the restaurant’s interior is covered with wood, and the space features porthole windows, first mate’s chairs, and captain’s bar stools.
Naturally, the menu boasts nautical-themed cocktails, oysters, and, of course, hot dogs. Choose from a regular, plant-based, or “sunken” dog — a deep-fried, bacon-wrapped delight. Locals love the popular Papaya Dog, a Nathan’s all-beef dog on a Martin’s potato roll, topped with Pikliz (a spicy Haitian slaw), papaya mustard, coconut mayo, and cilantro for a tropical twist.

Dairy Del
Neighborhoods: Schnitzelburg and Taylor Berry
More Info: dairydel.com
Though Dairy Del is primarily known as a top ice cream spot, its chili dogs have also gained a loyal following. The 75-year-old Louisville institution’s dog options are classic, nostalgic picks, perfect for pairing with a bit of soft-serve. Choose from hot dogs, chili dogs, chili cheese dogs, bratwurst, Polish sausage, and vegan dog options — and enjoy!

Dairy Kastle
Neighborhood: St. Joseph
More Info: dairykastle.com
Dairy Kastle is another old-school spot serving a variety of dogs. Choose from classic hot dogs or vegan dogs with or without nacho cheese, or explore the bratwurst, Polish sausage, corndog, and BBQ Polish sausage options. We suggest pairing a chili dog with a milkshake for a nostalgic drive-in meal.

Toasty’s Tavern
Neighborhood: Shelby Park
More Info: toastystavern.com
While the smashburgers at this popular Shelby Park spot are not to be missed, hot dog lovers will “relish” the hot dog options available at Toasty’s Tavern. For a classic taste, try the Toasty’s dog, an all-beef hot dog with smoked poblano relish and Toasty’s sauce, or the chili dog with house-made chili and shredded cheese.
Take your taste buds on an adventure with the Seattle dog featuring Dijon cream cheese, griddled onions, and pickled jalapeño, or get spicy with the Hot Brown dog, slathered with cheese sauce and tomato relish. All dogs can be made vegetarian when available, so everyone can enjoy a taste of Toasty’s.

Happy National Hot Dog Month, Louisville!
