A Beautiful, Breezy, Beachy Kitchen
This beachside beauty combines happy colors with some unusual materials. Take a look at this gorgeous Ponte Vedra kitchen.
Is there any color combination more beloved than blue and white? For this ocean-side house in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, the designer only had to look outdoors for inspiration. “The client loves the color blue, which we thought was a perfect play off the white sand and blue water backdrop,” says Amy Johnson, owner of the aptly named Beach Chic Design. “But we wanted to give the kitchen a contemporary feeling to enhance the rest of the house, which is a little more traditional.”
Amy and builder Victory Homes & Development, Inc. started from scratch on this remodel, taking the room down to the studs for better space-planning. They removed the wall between the sitting room and kitchen and added new doors and windows to optimize the back porch and ocean view.
The designer chose cabinetry in a timeless white, going for a Shaker style, but from there things got more bold. A backsplash in blue agate (backlit for extra drama) provides an artistic focal point, paired with a glass island countertop in a rich indigo blue. “When a client loves color, we like to utilize pops of color, but typically in an organic way,” says Amy. She added other glam touches in the form of acrylic cabinetry hardware, mirrored doors, and a Murano glass light fixture with just the right amount of bling.
Other aspects of the space are informal and appropriately “beachy.” Cypress paneling in a vertical pattern had been in the previous space, so the designer decided to keep that look. The new sitting area is all about relaxing, with slip-covered swivel chairs and wooden side tables, all decorated in colors of the sand and sea.
Amy was careful to evenly weigh the mix of high-end and casual. “We wanted to balance the drama of the agate backsplash with the simplicity of white cabinetry and counters,” she says. Amy also made sure the kitchen area was less about appliances and more about style. Says the designer, “The Murano glass chandelier and art above the coffee bar played into our belief that a kitchen should be a beautiful space that you just happen to cook in.” And we’d say she successfully achieved that look!
