Remember when cottage cheese completely took over your social media feed? What about butter boards and baked feta pasta? Every season brings new viral concepts, and the latest collective fixation is rice paper-wrapped EVERYTHING! Thinking beyond dumplings and spring rolls, clever creators are using it for everything from breakfast to burgers. If you’re carb-conscious, gluten-intolerant, or just live for a good crunch, give a few of these rice paper recipes a try.
*If you’ve never used rice paper sheets before, they’re easily found at most major grocery chains in the international foods section, at specialty Asian markets, or even on Amazon. They may be labeled as rice paper sheets, rice paper wrappers, or spring roll wrappers.
Breakfast Bagels
Rice paper “bagels” are an insanely addictive vessel for your favorite breakfast ingredients. You simply need to dip your rice paper sheets in an egg wash, roll them up with your fillings, and bake or air fry for up to 15 minutes. Here, @majasrecipes stuffs hers with scrambled eggs, bacon, and cheese, but the sky is the limit.
Same Concept, But Make It a Spiral
The technique here is similar to the bagels, but with an obvious difference. This technique offers the potential for a doughier texture and a higher volume of delicious fillings. (If you like what you see, check out more posts from @thechefoutwest — he shares loads of great rice paper ideas.)
Rice Paper Pizza Crust
Looking for a quick, low-carb pizza fix? This one is a game-changer, especially if you avoid gluten. This technique from @shellyiscooking_ is definitely not masquerading as a convincing dupe for traditional pizza dough, but it’s a satisfying snack idea that’s easily customizable.
Or Pizza Rolls!
For a doughier, cheesier spin, opt for pizza pockets instead, courtesy of @alexarciab. She uses marinara, cheese, and pepperoni here, but you could easily throw in some veggies or swap red sauce for white sauce.
Crispy Rice Paper Chicken Nuggets
If you’re trying to meet a daily protein goal, these crunchy rice paper chicken nuggets are lower in calories than traditional breaded chicken nuggets, and they offer a satisfying texture that grilled nuggets don’t. This recipe from @laurennicole_la even includes a honey mustard-Greek yogurt dipping sauce!
Low-Carb Burger “Bun”
I’ve never been able to get on board with the bunless burger, or the lettuce-wrapped burger — just doesn’t do it for me. But rice paper offers just enough doughy/crispy goodness. Try topping yours with sesame seeds before you air-fry for more of that traditional flavor and texture. Shout out to @healthyeasytasty.kitchen for this tasty alternative.
Rice Paper Omelet
Akin to a breakfast quesadilla, this pan-fried rice paper omelet can be customized for your taste (and what you have on hand), but this spring onion, chili oil, and mozzarella combination from @oliveandspice_ may be hard to beat.
Quick Rice Paper Crisps
Next time you need a crispy vessel for guacamole, ceviche, or any other manner of chunky dip, try these insanely quick rice paper crisps as a fun departure from store-bought chips. Gratitude to @whiteonricecouple for proving this method works!
You can also drop rice paper sheets into oil for a few seconds, or cut them into triangles, spray with oil, season, and pop them into the air fryer — SO easy.
Chocolate Rice Paper “Croissants”
You can use many of these same techniques for sweet recipes, too! Here, @thefitfeast fills hers with a combination of butter, dark chocolate, vanilla extract, milk, and sugar. You could also try cream cheese and fruit … or plenty of butter, cinnamon, and sugar.
