Mother-son duo and original gallery owners Bess and Bill Bennett transferred ownership to Elizabeth about four years ago. Before becoming the official owner, Elizabeth served as the gallery manager for over two decades. Originally from Richmond, VA, Elizabeth learned a lot of what she knows about art from being mentored by the Bennetts over the years.

Elizabeth describes it as a successful small business that is about as far from the corporate world as you can get. “We’re very approachable, lighthearted, and do not take ourselves seriously,” she adds. “I think some people are intimidated because we’re a fine art gallery and we are in an exclusive area of Nashville, but once they come in our doors, they know that we’re not pretentious at all.”
This personalized, humble approach is what draws so many people to Bennett Galleries Nashville. You don’t have to be an art aficionado to peruse the gallery’s art collection. “Customers come in and find us to be friendly and helpful, not taking ourselves too seriously,” explains Elizabeth of the in-store experience. “We invite you to come in and browse around in the gallery. We can hold your hand and walk you through the whole process.”

It’s a great tool to see the gallery’s collection all at once in a single place. “We usually say that we have a lot of paintings in storage,” adds Elizabeth. “We can’t hang them all at once, so we like to direct people to our website, too.”
Similar to the in-store shopping experience, Elizabeth describes the approach as somewhat laidback when it comes to sourcing artwork. First, Elizabeth and gallery manager Miranda Herrick come together to decide if they like the submitted artwork. From there, the two decide if the artwork is a good fit for the gallery and if they think clients will appreciate the work.
“If it’s sellable and a good fit — that’s our system,” explains Elizabeth of the approach. “We’re about as far from official policies as we can be. We just take every day as it comes and watch it all unfold.”

The gallery offers a selection of European and American materials and can frame almost anything. “I would honestly say we have the best-of-the-best framers in this city, and our selection is great,” says Elizabeth of her framing team. “It goes from very affordable to very expensive, too. We can do the full gamut of framing. We frame anything.”

Elizabeth once again credits this to the gallery’s friendly approach to business and the wide selection of frames and molding they have in stock. “We can build frames quickly, and we have a lot of designers who need a quick turnaround,” adds Elizabeth. “Designers know that they can come to us, and we’ll say, ‘Okay, we’ll squeeze you in.’”
