Once a bustling railroad hub, South Main played a major role in Memphis’s early growth, with Central Station supporting the hotels, restaurants, and warehouses that lined the neighborhood. But as rail travel faded in the 1950s and ’60s, and in the wake of Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination in 1968, the area began to struggle. Things started to turn around in the 1990s with the opening of the National Civil Rights Museum, which helped spark a new chapter for the neighborhood. Today, South Main is thriving once again, filled with restaurants, culture, and plenty of character.
