National Overtip Day is celebrated each year on March 10, started by some friends in Nashville, TN. This is the anniversary of when their baby brother, Dr. Will McPherson, a dentist in the community, lost his life after battling a brain tumor at age 29. His family and friends celebrate him each year by overtipping their server. You see, one of Will’s greatest pleasures was leaving much more than 20 percent and knowing that he just made someone’s day with an extra $10 or $20, $40 depending on the size of the bill.
In memory of someone you’ve lost, who took such joy in making others happy, perhaps you, too, could adopt this day and overtip simply to bring joy to someone else. Do it in their memory or in Will’s memory. But let’s celebrate our loved ones who are no longer with us by making those around us have a better day, by adding a few more dollars to that tab. Just feel the love spread … akin to random acts of kindness! And if you valet your car, throw in a few extra dollars. Get in the spirit! I promise that on the drive home, you won’t be mad at the extra money you just spent; you’ll be giddy that you did it.
For added fun, plan a meal out with a group of friends or gather your family. It spreads the love a little more and makes it into a huge celebration. So in that vein, I’m highlighting my family’s favorite places to eat together, as one of them is likely where we will be overtipping this March 10, in honor of Will and for all our beloved friends and family who took such joy in making others happy during their too-brief time here on Earth.
