As temperatures drop, your skin and wellness routines need a seasonal refresh. The cooler months often bring dryness, lingering summer sun damage, and a tendency to skip SPF, but there are simple steps you can take to stay glowing and healthy through fall and winter. Here, Melissa Rhodes, aesthetic nurse practitioner and founder of Ona Skincare, shares her favorite treatments, products, and wellness tips for colder seasons.

Common Fall & Winter Skincare Challenges

As the seasons change, so does your skin. In fall and winter, you’re likely to notice more dry patches, stubborn pigmentation, and dullness. “Once indoor heating kicks on, there’s less moisture in the air, which can leave your skin dry and irritated,” explains Melissa.

Of course, one way to combat this is by regularly moisturizing your skin, but Melissa also emphasizes that hydration alone isn’t enough. Sun protection remains key, too. “People think if it’s not summer, they don’t need to wear SPF, but even the blue light from your computer screen can cause pigment,” she adds. “Wearing a good SPF with moisture and antioxidants is really important, even if you’re not leaving the house.”

Treatments to Repair & Refresh Skin

Expert treatments — including peels and lasers — can help heal post-summer skin. Melissa recommends scheduling these appointments in early fall to maximize results, especially before the stress of the holiday season kicks in.

“Peels are always a good option for sun damage or pigment,” she explains. “We do a lot of deeper peels in September and October to get rid of the summer sun damage and refresh the skin.”

For those looking to target redness or pigmentation more precisely, IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatments are another popular choice. Melissa also highlights erbium laser resurfacing for a deeper refresh. “If somebody really wants a bigger treatment to remove damage that’s come up to the surface, erbium is a really great option,” she shares.

As the days grow cooler and less humid, Melissa recommends using richer moisturizers to lock in hydration and incorporating masks to help moisture penetrate more deeply. Growth factors, peptides, and retinols are also key year-round staples to keep skin firm and smooth.

Melissa also recommends a few of her personal favorite products, including the ZO Growth Factor Serum to rebuild collagen and keep skin firm, and ZO’s hydroquinone products to help address sun-induced discoloration.
