First things first. Where are you from originally?

I’m originally from Apalachicola, Florida, a small town known for oysters and the “Redneck Riviera.” I moved to Nashville after meeting my husband, who was already working in the automotive industry.

You’re paving the way in a male-dominated field. What inspired you to enter the world of custom automotive design?

It happened naturally as Elite Customs grew. Initially, I was handling the books, marketing, and media out of necessity. But as the business expanded, I became more involved in the creative and operational side of things. I’ve always been hands-on, growing up around construction with my dad. So, working with tools and custom builds felt second nature.

What are some common misconceptions about women in the auto industry?

One of the biggest misconceptions is that women are just there as ‘eye candy’ rather than playing an active role in the business. The reality is that women bring natural strengths to the industry, especially in branding, marketing, and customer relationships.

Walk us through one of your favorite builds and what made it so special.

My personal favorite was my own Jeep Wrangler, which I customized with a leopard print theme, an upgraded sound system, and a ton of modifications. But professionally, I love working on first-car builds for young clients. Seeing how much pride they take in their custom vehicle is really rewarding, and we’ve built lasting relationships with families who come back for multiple projects.

Who were some of your role models growing up?

My great-grandmother, Florida Ann Barfield, was a huge inspiration. She was controversial at the time — leaving her husband, raising kids on her own, and building a successful career on her own. The women in my family have always been strong-willed, and that’s something I carry with me in business and life.

What do you do to unwind after a long day in the shop?

Driving home with the windows down and blasting music is my go-to way to decompress. I also love cooking for my family and sometimes even for the shop employees.

What’s one tool you can’t live without in your daily life?

The Notes app on my phone! It helps me stay organized and keep track of ideas, especially with my ADHD.

It’s not just about cars; it’s about turning every vehicle into a one-of-a-kind work of art. Sam and her husband, Rich, are known for their eye-catching designs and precision work, transforming everyday vehicles into customized showpieces through high-end wraps, performance upgrades, and modifications. If you could custom-build a car for any woman in history, who would it be?

Dolly Parton, without a doubt. It would be rosy pink and glamorous but practical, just like her!

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

“Don’t take advice from anyone you wouldn’t switch places with.”

Name three things you can’t live without?

Three things I definitely could not live without are traveling, antique shopping, and my dog, Cyrus.

LIGHTNING ROUND

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I always wanted to be a singer. I was actually signed to a Christian label and released two albums.

One thing people would be surprised to find out about you?

I’m a true crime fanatic and love the Morbid podcast.

Any hidden talents?

I can touch my nose with my tongue.

Self-care item you can’t live without?

There is nothing better than a bubble bath. They are my go-to self-care ritual.
