Dr. Don Griffin of Nashville Cosmetic Surgery answers the commonly asked questions about Morpheus8, a minimally invasive skin tightening treatment.

How does Morpheus8 work?

Morpheus8 is a skin tightening cosmetic treatment that combines microneedling and radiofrequency energy, working to improve sagging skin, creases, wrinkles, scarring, enlarged pores, sun damage, and uneven skin texture.

This combination of radiofrequency and microneedling is what makes Morpheus8 stand out. Standard microneedling treatments typically penetrate 1 millimeter deep into skin and fat. However, because Morpheus8 is customizable, its needles can penetrate 4 millimeters deep in the face and 7 millimeters deep in the body. It’s this customization that leads to better results and more elastic, supple-looking skin. “[Morpheus] needles are like a stamping needle that goes down and comes up, and you can control how deep it goes,” explains Dr. Griffin. “Once the needles are in the skin, radiofrequency energy is delivered between the tips at whatever depth is chosen. So basically, it’s generating energy between the needles and from the needles into skin.”

Morpheus8 can be used on any part of the body and on any skin type to treat loose skin, wrinkles, acne scars, stretch marks, and surgery scars.

To achieve superior skin tightening results, Morpheus8 remodels fat, tissue, and collagen under the skin. “You can customize Morpheus8 from [being] shallow where you’re just doing skin resurfacing, or you can use it on the body, and it’ll penetrate almost a centimeter deep,” says Dr. Griffin. This is what stimulates collagen production to tighten and smooth skin on the face and body.

What is treatment like?

Because Morpheus8 is a minimally invasive cosmetic treatment, the process is relatively comfortable. Before beginning treatment, patients are given topical numbing cream to help with any pain or discomfort. “[Morpheus8] emits radiofrequency energy, which heats up the fat internally,” says Dr. Griffin. “You’re melting fat, and you’re heating up the skin as well. You’re also heating up the connective tissue network of fibers between your skin and your muscle or your deeper tissue.”

Who is an ideal candidate for Morpheus8?

Morpheus8 is well suited for all ages, but it’s especially beneficial for older women, as it helps combat three major components of aging — sagging skin, wrinkles, and loss of volume. Additionally, Morpheus8 works against uneven texture by smoothing skin. The treatment provides these results by stimulating collagen production, which is what promotes skin elasticity and suppleness.

What is downtime like after treatment?

Morpheus8 patients typically see a 20-40% improvement of skin tightening, and the treatment does not require downtime. In fact, you can return to most normal activities immediately. However, it’s important to note that you may experience a bit of swelling, redness, or soreness. Dr. Griffin also recommends that if Morpheus8 treats the face, that patients do not apply makeup for at least 24 hours post-treatment.

How much does Morpheus8 cost at NCS?

Pricing starts at $1,000, up to $2,000 per treatment, depending upon the area being treated.
