What is in that taco seasoning packet? It’s so easy to make your own seasoning at home using ingredients you trust, and making it in bulk so that you always have it on-hand for vegetables, soup, chicken, steak and — of course — ground beef.
Kroger has a large selection of Simple Truth Organic® spices, along with their Private Selection and house brand options. In our ongoing collaboration with them, we are given complete leeway on recipes and what to make. It’s through this creative license that we’ve become such a fan of their in-store lines and the value they provide. To make this taco seasoning — and testing it for taco meat — we looked to their spice collection and their Simple Truth Organic® ground beef.
At this point, we’ve used this seasoning for taco meat, vegetables, on hummus, corn on the cob, in homemade queso and as a rub for flank steak. It’s delicious!
It basically takes two minutes to make, so try it and vary it based on what YOU like. For example, many taco seasoning mixes have oregano, but this one does not. If you love oregano, by all means put a little bit in. If you prefer onion flakes to onion powder, again, swap it out and make your own signature Mexican spice rub! This was specifically made to be easy to remember with portions that, once made, likely can be made again from memory.
One last thing: Note that this recipe does not include salt. Just salt as you go, as you normally would. This makes the recipe work for those watching their sodium and those who are not.
- 4 Tablespoons chili seasoning
- 2 Tablespoons paprika
- 1 Tablespoon garlic powder
- 1 Tablespoon onion powder
- 1 Tablespoon black pepper
- 1 Tablespoon cumin
- 1 Tablespoon cornstarch
- Mix all ingredients together in a bowl.
- This makes 5 servings (2 Tablespoons per serving) plus 1 Tablespoon extra.
Once you make this mix, you’ll be shocked at how it becomes part of so many recipes! Enjoy!
