Autumn in Birmingham may still bring its share of warm afternoons, but the city’s mood has already begun to shift into a fall mindset. This year’s trends bring interesting textures, layered silhouettes, and plenty of rich browns, blues, and animal prints. Here, four local boutiques are showcasing the trends they’re most excited about — and fun ways to wear them.

Feathers Boutique
Neighborhood: Vestavia
More info: shopfeathersboutique.com
One of Vestavia’s newest gems, Feathers Boutique, opened its doors in June, bringing a fresh blend of style and ease to the Birmingham fashion scene. Owned by Tealla Stewart (who also owns the beloved 35-plus-year Vestavia staple, Monograms Plus), Feathers offers clothing that makes women feel both confident and comfortable — classic pieces with just the right amount of “extra.”
Looking ahead to fall, they’re seeing bold patterns in rich seasonal hues like brown, green, and rust, as well as tonal textures with intricate embroidery, pleated skirts, scalloped details, suede, leather, faux fur, and tiger print. “We’re so excited for fall — the colors, the prints, the textures, the little details like embroidery and scallops. It’s all about pieces you can wear all day and feel amazing in,” shares Nancy Schilling, Feathers’ stylist and buyer.
Cream and Metallic
With the illusion of two separate pieces, this cream dress combines a cropped top and pleated skirt for effortless style while keeping it comfortable. “Pleated skirts are trending, and their versatility means you can dress them up with a gold bootie for an unexpected style or keep them casual with flats,” says Nancy. “Layer with a jacket, shawl, or denim jacket for a personalized touch.”

Quintessential Sweater and Jeans
From the colors to the scalloped hem detailing, this duo is fall-ready. The deeper fall hues allow the jewelry and shoes to pop, and they can easily be dressed up with boots and a jacket or kept casual with flats or sneakers for daytime errands.

Tone-on-Tone Embroidery
“Tone-on-tone textured embroidery makes this green dress a showstopper on its own,” Nancy says. With a forgiving shape that flatters any body type, it’s effortlessly versatile — pair with flats or slides for day, or a low heel or boot for night. Simple gold accessories are all you need to let the details of this dazzling dress shine.

Effie’s Inc.
Neighborhood: Homewood
More info: shopeffies.com
Effie’s has been dressing women in Tuscaloosa for over 35 years, and its Homewood location — open for about four years — has quickly become a go-to destination for dresses for practically any occasion.
This fall, the boutique is embracing rich colors, from dreamy blues to warm western-inspired hues. “Everything is very western-inspired this season, with lots of denim, suedes, and dark brown suede,” says Meagen Carter, Homewood’s store manager. Animal prints are also making a splash, and the key to rocking these trends, she notes, is starting small — “bringing it in somewhere, like a bag or shoe, instead of head to toe” — like layering a suede jacket over a denim dress or pairing a camel suede piece with a touch of leopard.
Updated Denim
Denim is always in style for fall, but it’s getting a chic update with this dress that offers a tailored nod to the western trend. Pair it with boots and layer in gold and turquoise accents for an effortlessly stylish daytime look. “Add a suede leather jacket, then switch from boots to heels and simple gold or pearl accents for nighttime for an effortlessly polished look,” Meagen says.

Subtle Sequins
Sequins are shining this season, and this mini is proof. With shades of blue and playful sheer accents (lined for easy wear), it’s the perfect choice for homecoming, formals, or a fun night out. Meagen suggests keeping the accessories simple — a delicate dangle earring and strappy heel — to let the dress do all the sparkling.

Pleating
We see pleats again in this floor-length ombré dress. This piece is a statement all on its own, so keep the styling simple. A chic heel and a dangle earring add just the right complements without taking away from the beauty of the pleated detail.

Ryan Reeve
Neighborhood: Cahaba Heights
More info: ryan-reeve.myshopify.com
Ryan Reeve has been bringing timeless, quality fashion to Birmingham since opening its doors in Cahaba Heights in 2018. Known for classic styles with just the right touch of trend, the boutique makes it easy for women to look polished without feeling overdone.
This fall, owner Beth Keplinger is especially excited about the return of rich, moody hues. “Chocolate brown suede is big for fall, and oxblood — merlot, wine, whatever you want to call it — is huge,” she shares. “It’s such a flattering color on almost all complexions.”
Statement Details
The denim dress is a core piece for any wardrobe, offering comfort with a polished edge. Wear it with the included obi belt for a defined look, or Beth suggests swapping in your own belt, such as a woven rattan in warmer months and leather in cooler weather, which gives the dress year-round versatility. Pair with boots, heels, or even sneakers to change the vibe.
The tiger print dress, on the other hand, is bolder and taps into another one of the season’s biggest patterns. “Animal prints are huge this fall, and when you work them into a timeless silhouette like this dress, you get a piece that feels both trendy and classic,” says Beth. With bold prints, she suggests keeping the accessories simple and letting the pattern speak for itself.

Sweater Weather
Two fall-ready looks, each with its own standout twist — a blush embroidered sweater that pairs effortlessly with denim for day or layers beautifully over satin for evening, and a striped knit styled with dark jeans. “A great sweater is always a wardrobe staple,” says Beth, “but when you can elevate it with a unique detail or pattern like this, it gives your closet a power piece.”
Beth’s styling tip: Let one piece “sing,” as she likes to say. “Whether it’s the sweater or the pant, keep the rest of the look simple with jewelry and shoes so your statement piece takes center stage.”

Classic Fall Colorways
Beth says that slim-fit pants are making their way back this fall, and this cognac ponte pant (pictured below on the right) proves why they work. The flattering front seam gives a long, lean line while still being easy to wear. Paired with a cashmere cardigan, the look is polished yet practical.
Because cashmere is lightweight and breathable, it’s ideal for Birmingham’s unpredictable fall weather. Style tip: wear the cardigan open over a crisp blouse by day, then button it up and swap in sleek accessories for an instant evening update.

Rich browns and caramels take center stage in this lightweight cotton dress — the perfect nod to fall trends while still keeping things Birmingham-weather friendly. With a tiered ruffle and subtle puff sleeve, it offers just the right amount of detail. “Most dresses that come with belts, like this one, can also be worn without,” Beth says. “The belt lets you accentuate the waist, or you can skip it for a fuller, flowier look.”

Gus Mayer
Neighborhood: The Summit
More info: gusmayer.com
For decades, Gus Mayer has been a staple for Magic City fashion, offering a curated blend of timeless style and cutting-edge trends. This fall, the retailer is embracing a range of looks that feel both fresh and wearable, shares AC Graham, Gus Mayer’s PR and marketing manager. According to their buyers, capelets are making a statement as an elegant layering piece, while chocolate brown and rich burgundy continue to dominate the season’s color story.
Embellishments and studs are adding edge to everything this season, and oversized suiting, slouchy denim, and wide-leg trousers will bring a modern ease to dressing. Sporty knits keep things comfortable yet polished, while touches of modern mysticism and whimsical prints add a playful, unexpected element.
Whimsical Prints
This Zimmerman dress brings together so many of the season’s biggest trends in one piece. The whimsical, vintage-inspired print of roses and swirls captures that playful, romantic mood, while browns and dusty pinks tie perfectly into fall’s color story.
“Even the details feel special,” AC shares. “From the rose-embellished buttons to the belt with its little charms, embellishments are everywhere right now, and this dress gets it exactly right.”
Versatility is another win. You can pair it with a boot or bootie for work, then swap in a kitten heel for a dinner out or a bridesmaid luncheon. AC also suggests leaning into statement accessories, like a leopard pointy-toe pump or a handcrafted Bene bag in hazelnut crocodile for an unexpected finish.

Texture and Shine
This dark top and brown flare pants are a fall-ready combo that balances classic warmth with trendy details. The top’s sheer overlay paired with an under slip adds subtle shine, making it perfect for evening looks, while the little tie can be styled as a bow or scarf. Add in a studded leather bag and cow-print shoes, and you’ve got a nod to this season’s love of embellishments and playful textures, making the outfit effortlessly chic from day to night.

MORE Blues and Browns!
This brown and turquoise dress is a perfect pick for fall, combining rich seasonal hues with a classic A-line shape that’s easy to wear and flattering on most figures. “One thing I love about the blues we’re seeing this season is that it’s not so limited to only the fall because it’s so dark. It’s a fun color,” AC notes, highlighting its versatility.
AC suggests styling this dress with tall boots for a chic, on-trend fall look, or adding a blazer for cooler evenings. The dress’s shape and color palette also make it a great option for other seasons.
