ARTlab: Natural Dyeing Silk
Create a one-of-a-kind organic silk scarf during this hands-on natural dyeing workshop inspired by the exhibition An Indigenous Present at the Frist Art Museum. Guided by instructor Jan Quarles, participants use natural dyes inspired by the organic materials featured in works by Gabrielle L’Hirondelle Hill and Audie Murray, including blackberry ink, spider cocoon, bear grease, and sunlight on cotton. After selecting colors from a “buffet” of natural dyestuffs, attendees will create abstract prints on silk and steam the scarves to set the colors.
