An Indigenous Present
An Indigenous Present at the Frist Art Museum offers a powerful exploration of modern and contemporary Indigenous art spanning the last century. Co-organized by acclaimed artist Jeffrey Gibson, a member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and of Cherokee descent, alongside independent curator Jenelle Porter, the exhibition brings together significant works by fifteen artists who use abstraction to tell personal and collective stories, depict real and imagined landscapes, and expand upon cultural and artistic traditions. Showcasing both established and emerging voices, the exhibition highlights the richness, diversity, and ongoing evolution of Indigenous art practices across generations.
