Floral designer and painter Buffy Hargett Miller has been styling, designing and creating memories from a young age, and her innate passion shows through in everything she does. A photo stylist at Southern Progress for more than 20 years, the well-known designer and artist brings a creative, energetic vibe to every project she encounters. Welcome today’s FACES of Birmingham profile, Buffy Hargett Miller!
Where did you grow up and how did you wind up in Birmingham?
I grew up in Birmingham and studied interior design and art at the University of Alabama. After college, I moved to New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Dallas before coming back to Birmingham with my husband and three boys. It’s is a great place to raise a family and a good place to call home.
How did you get your start in floral design?
My mother, Betty Drennen, was a floral designer and event planner in Birmingham, so I guess you could say it is “in my genes.” I worked with her for many years and had the opportunity to learn from some of Birmingham’s best designers.
Do you have a favorite flower or arrangement?
There are so many, but I would have to say that quince is my favorite flower. It is perfectly beautiful in its simplicity. I love that it only blooms once a year and is something to look forward to in the cold winter months.
Where do you find inspiration?
I follow many of my favorite floral designers from all over the world on Instagram. It’s fun to see what they are doing! The flower markets in New York and San Francisco are also some of my favorite places to get inspired.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
To be grateful in all things … the good times and the bad. Becoming a truly thankful person can be the healthiest change you can make in your life.
What advice would you give to others?
Less is more. Seriously!!! I have downsized my possessions and my life and find that I now have the wisdom and the time to enjoy what really matters.
Where is your favorite place to go either in town or nearby to relax or recharge?
The Sugar Shack in Destin, FL. It is a great place for David and I to gather with our family. We were married on the porch there just a year-and-a-half ago!
Favorite thing to do on a Saturday night?
Snuggling up at home to watch a movie after working on a big wedding is about as good as it gets.
Favorite local restaurant?
Sitting outside at Bottega in the spring or fall … absolutely the best!
Favorite vacation spot?
Sullivan’s Island, SC. We have lots of great family memories there.
What is your must-have purchase for this spring season?
A new pair of Antelope shoes and a great pedicure with turquoise polish!
Name three things you can’t live without, excluding faith, friends and family.
Good coffee, music and laughing every day!
