Sprucing up for Spring: Layered Rugs

With the arrival of spring, I always get that itch–that feeling that makes you look around and think “Ok, I’ve got to change this room up!” This year, it happens to be the living room in my house that’s bugging me in particular, so whether it’s adding some color or bringing in something fresh, an update of some sort is in order to turn a space that feels drab and boring into a room I actually like walking into. There are multiple ways to bring in some freshness without spending a lot of money. You can add new pillows, pick a new paint color, or bring in new accessories. But, the look that I have been loving lately is the layered rug.
Layering rugs is easy. If you have a neutral rug (particularly sisal, which is a great base layer), or even neutral wall-to-wall carpet, simply add a smaller, patterned rug on top. It’s that easy! I think the layered rug looks best when it is anchored by a piece of furniture, like the coffee table in the photo above. Stripes are always a lovely, fresh spring option. Adding a fun, bright geometric rug is another way to achieve a fresh layered look. I love the pops of color that these rugs bring to a room. You can either choose a rug with a bright geometric pattern or stick to something with a simpler geometric look.

Ebay is a great place to find unique, one of a kind kilims and dhurries to layer. I often spot good options at Scott’s Antique Market every month, too! You can find Dash and Albert rugs and samples of their line at many Atlanta stores including:
