Minutes from Downtown Louisville in the NuLu neighborhood, there’s a salon that has become much more than “just another place to get your hair done.” A steadily rising star in the national beauty industry, TRIM NuLu has amassed an impressive collection of accolades in just a few short years, including being named one of Inc. Magazine’s fastest-growing companies in the Southeast. But for CEO Sean Stafford and his team, the true markers of success go far beyond awards.

“We’re not curing cancer, and we’re not rocket scientists — we just do really great hair,” Sean says with a laugh. “And this blend of luxury and inclusivity is rare. Many salons are either ultra-exclusive or very accessible but without high-end services. TRIM NuLu manages to be both upscale and inviting.”

Accessible luxury is at the heart of TRIM NuLu’s identity. Since opening in August 2020, the salon has earned a reputation for delivering top-tier service in a warm and inclusive space. It’s no wonder they’ve been voted “Best Hair Salon in Louisville” four years in a row by The Courier-Journal, swept The Voice-Tribune’s “Your Voice” Awards in multiple categories, and consistently drawn clients from both down the street and across the globe.
Where Awards Meet Authenticity
TRIM NuLu’s front desk is a visual reminder of its success; framed plaques from local and national publications adorn the space. But Sean is quick to point out that the glitz of the awards only reflects the deeper substance underneath. That culture includes offering every stylist hourly or salaried pay — not the industry-standard booth rental or commission model. TRIM NuLu also provides full health insurance, dental and vision coverage, PTO starting in year one, and 401(k) matching. “These are all things that don’t typically exist in a salon,” Sean says.
While it might be unusual, it’s clearly working. The salon boasts an unusually high retention rate, with team members feeling comfortable and secure enough in their positions to start families. “People have babies when they’re in a situation where they’re comfortable,” Sean says. “If you’re planning a family, you want to be in a solid place — and here, they have that.”

Excellence Through Education
The salon also invests heavily in continuing education. As the only Redken Black Level salon in Louisville, TRIM NuLu has exclusive access to high-level training. Educators from around the country stop by to teach new color techniques, precision cuts, and extension methods. Tenured stylists sometimes lead sessions as well.
“There’s this whole under-the-hood machine operating to ensure our team is constantly leveling up,” Sean explains. “That’s what leads to quality and consistency — the two things we’re most focused on.”

New talent is brought to TRIM NuLu through a structured mentorship process. Emerging stylists start at the reception desk while they complete their licensure and then undergo a months-long, hands-on training program. They master blowouts and color touch-ups and eventually progress to more complex services. This ensures that they’re more than ready by the time they’re full-time on the floor.
“We’re a very departmentalized salon,” explains Sean. “Most stylists either specialize in color or cutting. Some do both, but the idea is that when you do something every day, you get really good at it.”

Derby’s Favorite Destination
With the Kentucky Derby on the horizon, TRIM NuLu is entering its busiest season. Derby Week is Louisville’s most festive time of year, and TRIM NuLu has become the go-to salon for clients seeking red-carpet-ready looks to pair with their fascinators.
Appointments are booked months in advance by both locals and visitors alike, including clients from London, Paris, and Dublin. Whether it’s a seamless blowout for the track, an elegant updo for a black-tie affair, or perfectly placed waves to complement a designer hat, TRIM NuLu has become an essential stop for Derby attendees who want their hair to match the prestige of the occasion.

Customer Care That Stands Out
While customer service is top-notch, what truly sets TRIM NuLu apart is how they handle the unexpected. “No salon is perfect,” Sean tells us. “Sometimes a client walks out, and everything is technically done right … but they still don’t love it. We get that. And we fix it.”
While offering corrections is common practice for many top-notch salons, wait times can be frustratingly long. TRIM NuLu accommodates changes as quickly as possible, often within the same day.
A Space as Unique as the Service
TRIM NuLu’s physical space can best be described as “historic charm meets modern chic.” Housed in a restored 1890s Second Empire-style building, the salon features exposed stone pulled from the Ohio River, sleek styling stations, and airy color rooms. The team also recently expanded into a 4,250-square-foot layout to keep pace with demand.
Plans are underway to transform the outdoor courtyard into a serene processing and lounge area, further elevating the client experience. “It’s a pretty little place here in the middle of Downtown Louisville,” says Sean. “It will be like an oasis.”

The Secret Behind the Success
With 16 stylists and counting, TRIM NuLu is constantly growing. New hires undergo a rigorous vetting process to ensure they match the salon’s values and vision. “We’re very picky about who we bring on,” Sean explains. “We go over everything thoroughly to ensure they’re a right fit before we offer them a position.”

Despite the acclaim and quick growth, Sean insists the heart of TRIM NuLu’s success is simple. “We take care of our stylists, and they take care of our clients. We’ve built trust one appointment at a time, and that reputation is hard to beat.”
