How Custom Storage Can Completely Change Your New Home!

We’ve previously shared life-changing organization tips and advice about streamlining your wardrobe from the experts at California Closets Nashville, so it’s no secret they excel in innovation, organizational knowledge, and quality craftsmanship. Today, we’re sharing a first-hand experience from StyleBlueprint’s founder and CEO, Liza Graves, about working with the California Closets Nashville team to add more storage to her own home — and the results are absolutely stunning!

In terms of the overall vision for the project, it was pretty simple: to make a sterile new build feel more homey and comfortable. After recently moving from a beautiful, historic home that was twice the size, this home had its challenges. “Making it feel like home went beyond painting the walls and adding wallpaper and stair runners. We needed some serious storage added,” Liza explains. “Our first call was to California Closets Nashville to maximize our storage, make our new house work for our lifestyle, and give us a place for everything.”

Although the home lacked a mudroom, California Closets Nashville was able to add storage and space to hang bags and coats in this entryway.

For Liza, turning to California Closets Nashville was a no-brainer — especially because the company has a facility in Nashville where they build their products locally. “They have great customer service, and while it’s a big brand, it’s a local franchise, and they give back to the community, which I’m all about,” Liza adds. “But, the product is top-of-the-line and has a lifelong warranty. And, they were able to turn the entire project around in about 30 days.”

When it comes to new builds, homes typically only offer a very basic footprint, which means they also severely lack storage space. In fact, Liza says the closets in her home originally had only a single rod and shelf; the laundry room didn’t have any shelving, and the house lacked a mudroom. With help from California Closets Nashville, five closets, the living room, garage, and primary bathroom all received a significant facelift.

The closets perhaps received the most attention, and Liza says that the California Closets Nashville team added about three times the storage space to each of them. “We added more rods and more shelving,” she adds. “In the two walk-in closets, we added eight drawers as well. I asked our designer to just maximize the space! We also added some pull-out features for belts and ties.” One of the home’s bedrooms was also turned into a media room, and California Closets Nashville built a desk space in the room’s closet!

No walk-in closet? No problem. California Closets’ designers can maximize every inch of your existing closet space. This closet is similar to what many homes have, and this upgrade adds a massive amount of storage.

California Closets Nashville also helped maximize storage in the home’s open-plan living, dining, and kitchen space. In addition to wall-to-wall bookcases, California Closets Nashville also incorporated a custom 18-foot storage piece — something Liza says she almost skipped. “It adds so much warmth to the living room and an incredible amount of storage,” she says of how grateful she is to have added this piece. “It’s also so pretty and functional.”

“We have a ton of books, and we love the look of books,” says Liza of adding the bookcases pictured here. “They are just so comforting, and books have a life of their own. I also needed something to visually balance the bright wallpaper in the kitchen. The full-wall bookcase does this. And, I’m a bit embarrassed we had our Frame TV set to the Mona Lisa for this shoot!”

Custom storage solutions added depth to the open-plan living area, creating a sense of coziness that the home originally lacked. Here, you can see the kitchen wallpaper. The bookshelf helped to visually balance the color and make the open-concept room united.

California Closets Nashville also upgraded the primary bathroom, adding storage between the sinks and floor-to-ceiling storage in the toilet room.

Another room that received a significant upgrade was the home’s garage. Liza says the garage would have quickly become a disaster zone without the newly added storage space. With added shelves, cubbies, and utility walls, there is more space to store items like large tools and bikes. “We also had them build out an area for our gun safe,” adds Liza. “My husband hunts, and we are super safe with our shotguns, which means they need to be locked up. California Closets Nashville was able to build around the gun safe so that it’s not very obvious that it’s there.”

“The guys who came to install everything were so nice and super professional,” explains Liza of what stood out to her during the installation process. “They obviously love what they do, and they were the biggest surprise because they were just so detail-oriented.”

In addition to high-quality custom storage solutions, California Closets Nashville also guarantees a seamless process with dedicated professionals to offer assistance along the way. “They are professional, and the product is amazing. I didn’t work with an interior designer for these pieces; I simply leaned into the expertise of my designer at California Closets, and she was great! They know what they are doing, and their customer service is outstanding. When I had a few issues, they were quick to respond,” Liza explains of her experience. “And you don’t have to wait months and months for the installation or pay custom woodwork prices. With multiple finishes, I could splurge in some areas and have basic finishes in others. It’s made our house really work for us, and we’re completely happy with how everything turned out.”

California Closets Nashville’s Center of Excellence houses its administrative offices, state-of-the-art production facility, and beautiful showroom and is located at 2601 Winford Avenue.
