Jestina Howard: FACES of Birmingham
She's wanted to work in the beauty industry since she was a little girl. Today, Jestina Howard has her own line of cosmetics and is doing what she loves each and every day.
From early in childhood, Jestina Howard knew she wanted to work in the beauty industry. Sheβd sneak her sisterβs cosmetics to school in her backpack and make up her friends in the girlsβ bathroom during lunch. Back then, she was paid inΒ dessert currency, but today, sheβs paid in money. Her customers are women in search of quality cosmetics and a fresh, new look, which they find in Jestinaβs line of cosmetics called Aware. Welcome todayβs FACES of Birmingham profile, Jestina Howard!

How did youΒ become a makeup artist?
I alwaysΒ knew I would work in the beauty industry from the time I was a little girl. In the seventh grade, I wouldΒ take the cosmetic products my older sister would give me to play with at home and sneak themΒ to school in my backpack. I didnβt take the products to put on my face, I took them to make upΒ my βclientsβ (i.e. classmates) in the girlsβ bathroom during lunch period! I got paid in desserts orΒ snacks, instead of cash. I got in so much trouble at school and at home for doing that! When I got to high school, I continued to do makeup for classmates, and I also worked at PizitzΒ Department Store in the cosmetics department. By the time I graduated high school, I was doingΒ freelance makeup for local hair and fashion shows. I got my first degree in fashionΒ merchandising and had a long, wonderful and fun career as a fashion stylist and then aΒ PR/special events manager both for Parisian/Saks Inc. corporate offices. I also worked forΒ several cosmetics companies, salons and spas over the years. I got my first big job doing printΒ advertisements for Weight Watchers Magazine, and from there I was referred to others and was getting a lot of great paid jobs with major ad agencies and corporations. I eventually gotΒ two agents, one in Birmingham and one in L.A., to help me get more work in the industry.Β I decided to create my own cosmetics line when clients started asking me where they couldΒ purchase the products I used on them. I remember one client asked me, βWhy donβt you haveΒ your own line of products?β and then a lightbulb went off in my head! In 2003, I launchedΒ Aware Cosmetics and the rest is history.

Are you originally from Birmingham?
I was born in BirminghamΒ and grew up in a neighborhood called Sherman Heights in the Ensley area.
As a makeup artist, what are some of the biggest mistakes women make when doing theirΒ own makeup?
I notice that some women just donβt put on enough makeup, and by the end ofΒ the day, it looks like they are not wearing anything at all. I tell them to put a little more productΒ on so you can see it. Use eye and face primers to hold makeup in place and finishing powders toΒ knock off the shine. The whole contouring and highlighting craze has some ladies looking a bitΒ like drag performers during the daytime. In this case, less is more!
Do you have some drugstore finds that you want to share with our readers?
I absolutely love,Β love, love to shop for products in drugstores like Walgreenβs, CVS and Walmart! A few of myΒ favorite products are LβOreal Lash Out and Voluminous mascaras, NYX Cosmetics gel eyelinersΒ and lipliners, Milani powder foundations, Wet Nβ Wild eyeliner pencils, Equate makeup remover and Hard Candy, Cover Girl and Olay skin care products. You donβt have to spend a lot toΒ look great.

I know that you do a ton of weddings. What words of wisdom can you give brides when itΒ comes to their makeup?
Brides, please go for a classic makeup look that enhances your featuresΒ and will transcend years. You should not look like a totally different person on your wedding dayΒ where you are not recognized by your groom-to-be, parents or guests. You want to look back atΒ your wedding pictures and say, βWow, I looked beautiful!β instead of βWhy did I wear that trendyΒ teal eyeliner, heavy contoured cheeks and winged eyeliner?β
Can you give us your thoughts on Southern style, especially as it pertains to Birmingham?
Style in Birmingham now is very fashionable, with a twist of quirkiness to create your ownΒ individual look. Itβs not all about cowboy boots, monogrammed items and linen outfits anymore.

If you could have dinner with four people in your business, who would they be?
I would love toΒ have dinner with the following four people at the grand and glamorous Le Meurice restaurantΒ located inside Hotel Meurice in Paris, France:
1. Pat McGrath, British makeup artist and Procter &Β Gambleβs Global Creative Design Director. She creates unbelievable makeup looks for print adsΒ and runway shows for fashion designers such as Prada, Lanvin and Dolce & Gabbana. My dreamΒ is to do makeup backstage during Fashion Week with her.
2. Rick Baker, makeup artist and specialΒ effects guru. He was the makeup artist on hit movies such as Star WarsΒ and Maleficent, and heΒ has won seven Best Makeup Academy Awards. Recently, Rick retired after being in the businessΒ for four decades. He was interviewed by a magazine about why he is retiring, and I love what heΒ said: βI like to do things right, and they wanted cheap and fast. That is not what I want to do, so IΒ just decided it was basically time to get out.β
3. Bobbi Brown, makeup artist and founder of BobbiΒ Brown Cosmetics. I admire how she started her career by creating 10 basic lip colors and gettingΒ Henri Bendelβs to carry them. Now, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics are sold in several other majorΒ department stores throughout the United States.
4. Karl Lagerfeld, German fashion designer and AndreΒ Leon Talley, former editor-at-large at Numero RussiaΒ magazine and former American editor-at-large for Vogue magazine for three decades. I know these two divas are not makeup artists, butΒ they have had fabulous careers in the fashion industry and Iβm sure would have wonderful stories to tell.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what are three things you would want in your cosmeticsΒ bag?
I would need Evian Facial Spray, Equate SPF50 Sport Sunscreen Spray, and AwareΒ Cosmetics Couture Runway Lip Lacquer.
Favorite thing to do on a Saturday night?
I love going to salsa dancing parties! Itβs so much fun, and I get a really good workout.
Whatβs your favorite local restaurant?
I actually have two places I love going to on a regularΒ basis. The first place is Surin West Thai restaurant. I usually eat the Thai noodle dish and andΒ sushi. My second favorite restaurant is Oak Hill Bar & Grill in Homewood. They have the bestΒ lunch specials and delicious lemon ice box pie.
What books are you currently reading?
Every Day a Friday β How to Be Happier 7 Days A Week, byΒ Joel Osteen, and Why Women Should Rule the World, by Dee Dee Myers.

What upcoming local event are you most looking forward to?
In Birmingham, we have a freeΒ concert series during the summer that takes place on Sunday afternoons in various parksΒ throughout the city called Jazz in the Park. The concert series presents over 200 emerging andΒ established artists, and all you have to do is take your blanket, chair, snacks and beverages andΒ relax under a shade tree. I love attending because thereβs always a diverse audience inΒ attendance that has one thing in commonβjust enjoying great live music!
Whatβs the best piece of advice youβve ever been given?
My mom has told me this since I was aΒ little girl, and itβs so true: βNothing beats a failure but a try.β
Name three things you canβt live without, excluding faith, family and friends.
I had to startΒ anew after the 2011 tornado damaged my home, and during that very challenging time thisΒ question rang true. I realized material things really donβt mean much β¦ you can always buy moreΒ things. But photos, memorabilia and family keepsakes sometimes canβt be replaced, and thoseΒ things are what I canβt live without and hold dear to my heart.
